The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development will deliver the science we need for the ocean we want.
关于我们
The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (Ocean Decade) will stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade.

Over half the planet lies in the ocean's depths, a vast and mysterious world unlike anything on land—and which remains largely unknown. Because we cannot protect what we do not know, as part of the #OceanDecade, scientists across the world are accelerating the discovery and understanding of our planet's final frontier, the deep sea: ?? Seabed 2030 is on a mission to deliver a complete map of the ocean floor by 2030. Over 70 partnerships have already driven significant progress: 26.1% of the ocean floor is now mapped, compared to just 6% in 2017, when Seabed 2030 was launched. ?? Since its launch in 2023, Ocean Census, the largest global mission to uncover ocean life, has already discovered over 800 new marine species, significantly advancing our understanding of ocean biodiversity. ?? The LIFEDEEPER project, led by INSTITUT FRANCAIS DE RECHERCHE POUR L'EXPLOITATION DE LA MER - IFREMER with Université de Bretagne Occidentale and partners, reveals life in some of the ocean's most extreme environments, enhancing our understanding deep-sea ecosystems and their vulnerability to mineral exploitation—and ensures that this knowledge informs vital discussions about deep-sea protection. ?? Women around the world continue to break barriers in sciences, contributing to marine research and fisheries management. Through the EAF-Nansen Programme, an #OceanDecade Action led by the FAO, female scientists across Eastern Africa and the Bay of Bengal play a key role in generating scientific knowledge on marine resources and ecosystems while receiving training and capacity-building opportunities that help them grow within the scientific community. Coordinators and members of ECOP UK joined Ocean Decade UK's first stakeholder event at The Royal Society in London, UK, yesterday. This one-day ocean science and policy dialogue event was organised with support from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and The Royal Society. The aim was to: ?? showcase UK projects and initiatives related to the UN Ocean Decade ?? highlight where UK engagement in the Decade supports and informs domestic and international policy ??discuss new policy directions and science priorities to seek broad agreement on the UK focus for the rest of the Decade ??? The workshop format served as an opportunity to promote collaboration, networking and opportunities for co-design of future initiatives and development of the Ocean Decade's legacy for the UK. ?? The evening reception included inspiring talks about engaging the public in ocean initiatives, along with an exhibition of National Oceanography Centre’s Discovery Collection. ?? It was a welcome chance to gather in person, take stock of the current “seascape”, and discuss the priorities for the next five years of the Decade at this critical midway milestone. We look forward to sharing further outcomes of the dialogue very soon. For more information on Ocean Decade UK visit: www.uk-ndc.org

Congratulations to Aphiwe Moshani and Liliana Sierra Castillo!??? With support from the BlueFood Futures Programme, an initiative endorsed by the #OceanDecade, these two early-career fellows will contribute to advancing research aligned with Decade Challenge 3 on blue food solutions and nutrition security, climate resilience, and social equity.???
?? Hello, LinkedIn! We are Blue Food Futures, a global program of the UN Ocean Decade that strengthens blue food science, policy, and community. Our goal is to research the roles of blue foods in addressing food, climate, nature, and social challenges, and to integrate key insights into policies. We also offer annual fellowships to early career researchers and professionals dedicated to filling knowledge gaps about blue foods and providing actionable insights for policymakers. This year, we’re delighted to welcome our inaugural fellows, Aphiwe Moshani at the University of Cape Town and Liliana Sierra Castillo (Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), Ocean Nexus, University of Rhode Island). ??
