Terima kasih to the SDG team at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta! Last week I had the tremendous opportunity to learn more about Indonesia's Voluntary National Review preparation process directly from Mr. Gantjang Amanullah and colleagues. We discussed key elements including stakeholder engagement, innovative financing, and localization. I loved to hear about the positive reinforcement they provide through the SDG Action Awards and the cooperative spirit they exude in seeking peer-learning exchanges. When asked, they cited strong support from the President and his administration as the reason why they were able to excel in achieving the SDGs considering over 60% of them are on track! On the last day in New Delhi, the NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs #IndiaGFI was hosted by Shombi Sharp, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in India. Originally from Kansas and California, Sharp is a veteran UN diplomat, and the senior most UN representative in India. His presentation highlighted how India's rise as a leading power will benefit global governance and multilateralism, especially in the context of poverty reduction, energy transition, climate mitigation, UN peacekeeping, and the attainment of the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. He noted that India's example will also serve as a model for other developing countries in the global South. Sharp also highlighted how the UN Offices in India were supporting India's SDG efforts by tracking progress at local levels and providing valuable data. We are very grateful to Radhika Kaul Batra, the seasoned Chief of Staff, who organized this crucial interaction despite an intensely busy schedule. Following this, efforts to implement the Pact for the Future, including the Global Digital Compact, are now in full swing. The month also saw crucial debates in the General Assembly’s First Committee, where growing divides among member states, including the P5, highlighted the increasing challenges of addressing emerging technologies and disarmament. A panel featuring disarmament ambassadors underscored deep divisions within the nuclear order, signaling the need for inevitable systemic change. At NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs , students observed key UN events, including the UN Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace, and Security. During Disarmament Week, Ambassador Alexander Kmentt shared insights on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, while Joop Theunissen offered a deep dive into the High-Level Political Forum process.
