Here's what to watch for in the months ahead: ???Poultry: Avian Flu (H5N1) outbreaks in the US are significantly impacting the supply and cost of eggs, chicken, and chicken products, as hundreds of millions of birds have been affected. This will include: Fryer chickens (whole) Chicken parts (wing, breast, thigh) that come from broiler chickens Canned and poached chicken products Eggs Egg products ???Pineapple: Drought and poor weather conditions have impacted the crop yield for the world’s largest producer of pineapples, Thailand. This will also affect: Canned pineapple products Pineapple juice ???Orange Juice: Citrus Greening Disease in Florida and Brazil, as well as extreme weather, are driving global shortages of oranges, leading to lower supply and increased prices and also affecting: Fresh orange juice Frozen orange juice concentrate ???Canned Foods: 25% tariffs on aluminum imports could impact the overall cost of a wide range of canned fruits, vegetables, entrees, and more. ???Broccoli & Cauliflower: Suboptimal growing conditions are impacting the growth season for broccoli and cauliflower, causing them to bloom prematurely. This may cause shortages in the spring when these crops are more commonly harvested. Stay informed and plan ahead to navigate potential disruptions. That’s why we offer flexible, tailored meal solutions to meet the unique needs of every sponsor and site. Whether you’re running a parent pick-up SFSP program, looking for home-delivered solutions in your rural community, or a smaller after-school initiative, our team can help! Thanks to the USDA’s 2023 rule changes, new models like the Rural Non-Congregate (RNC) program have expanded meal delivery options, allowing us to feed even more eligible children through at-home deliveries. Umoja was proud to help develop the pilot program that led to this innovative RNC model, creating more equitable access to meals for kids in need.
