Join us the evening of Wednesday, April 16 for a special screening of Breath of the Earth: A Story from the Treasure Island. This documentary film records a UMN soil scientist, Kyungsoo Yoo, visiting Jindo, an island in South Korea, for a decade, interacting and empathizing with the people. Jindo is known for its cultural traditions that predate the Confucian influence on the country. The islanders considered it an ethical human act to return the dead to the soil, whether they were friends or enemies. Just as soils are integral to the earth’s life-supporting functions, humans participate in the cycle through death. The people of Jindo joyfully celebrate this human destiny while recognizing the challenges of preserving traditions, as well as the difficulty of feeding people without harming the ecology. Mission: To advance the understanding of Earth system processes and the interaction among land, atmosphere, and water
关于我们
The mission of the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate is to advance the understanding of Earth system processes and the interaction among land, atmosphere, and water. Through research, teaching, and outreach we seek to improve and protect the quality of soil, air, and water resources in natural and managed ecosystems; enhance agricultural and forest productivity and sustainability; predict and mitigate impacts of environmental and climate change on ecosystems and society; and provide science based knowledge for improved decision making and a better informed citizenry.
