On Saturday, November 2 we were delighted to welcome 120 young scholars to the Capri Theater in North Minneapolis for STEM Saturday, where students in grades K-8 explored the world of engineering through free, hands-on activities. Huge thanks to the Capri Theatre, which hosted us for the third time, as well as Institute for Engineering in Medicine, University of Minnesota and The Harvest Best Academy for their continued partnership. STEM Saturdays return to Minneapolis on February 1, 2025!

Congratulations to this year’s IEM Engineering in Medicine Doctoral Fellowship recipient Huzefa H. ?? ???? Each year, IEM awards the Fellowship to support an outstanding graduate student conducting research with an IEM member. Huzefa is a Biomedical Engineering PhD student in IEM Member Dr. Brenda Ogle’s lab, co-advised by Dr. Ferenc Toth from the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. His research focuses on cartilage tissue engineering with the long-term aim of repairing damaged articular cartilage, which can be caused by common joint injuries and aging. “The hope is to implant cartilage embedded scaffolds into patients through a single step procedure,” says Huzefa, improving on most current therapies that take multiple procedures to complete.
