Did you know that 35% of dog and cat dental procedures were prescribed an antibiotic? Some prescriptions might be unnecessary. Data were presented by researchers Dr. Jennifer Granick and Emma Bollig last month at the 8th International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases Symposium. Underneath the lecture halls of the College of Veterinary Medicine lies one of the most unique collections in Minnesota. A dolphin skeleton from Valley Fair, double-headed skulls, cardiovascular systems preserved with ground-breaking techniques, specimens from all across the state. This is Dr. Vic Cox’s story. For years, this collection was stewarded at the University by Dr. Cox, and now more than ever it needs our help. This year, the Minnesota Veterinary Museum has initiated a preservation project to protect these specimens from decline and bring new public eyes to the collection through events, exhibitions, and more. But preserving this collection is no easy feat. From treating an infestation to digitizing the hundreds of specimens, our staff member Mari Kuennen needs your support. This Give to the Max Day, help Mari and the Minnesota Veterinary History Museum preserve a collection in need and share Dr. Vic Cox’s legacy! Give now: z.umn.edu/9z7e #GTMD24 #UMNgive

Do you have a personal or professional story about antibiotics or #antimicrobialresistance? If so, you are not alone. In the U.S., more than 2.8 million people will get an antibiotic-resistant infection, and more than 35,000 will die as a result. Read stories from veterinarians, patients, physicians, researchers, livestock producers, and more about how the overuse of antibiotics has impacted their lives. #USAAW24 #BeAntibioticsAware z.umn.edu/onehealthstories

Dr. Spannaus was no stranger to night calls. During the winter months, he would travel over frozen Lake Waconia to get to his appointments, but one night he wound up on the ice in the thick of a snow storm. Not even being able to see the horse he was riding, he was a half mile out on the lake with no way to see or turn back. So he dropped his lines and let his horse take the lead. With all his trust in his most faithful companion, his steed brought him all the way home, never straying from the path. This Give to the Max Day, help the Minnesota Veterinary Museum document stories like Dr. Spannaus’s. You can help fund new interview equipment and support our staff and volunteers as they travel across the state to record stories like this one. Give today: z.umn.edu/9z7e

University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine Research's Dr. Granick and Emma enjoyed talking with Minnesota State Fair goers about #antimicrobialresistance and appropriate antibiotic use. Pledge to use antibiotics only when needed, and know that antibiotics won’t help treat viral infections, like colds, flu, or COVID.
REMEMBER ?? Antibiotics only work for bacterial infections, not infections caused by viruses (like COVID-19, common cold, flu, etc.). Talk to your doctor about how to get symptom relief without antibiotics, and pledge to take antibiotics only when needed. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our state fair booth and signed a pledge to use antibiotics responsibly! #USAAW24 https://lnkd.in/gGXUUX68

Do you or your pet have leftover antibiotics or medications? Don't flush them down the toilet or drain or throw them in the trash. They end up contaminating our natural waterways. Dispose unused medications in a drop box at a pharmacy or law enforcement center. Everyone has a role in fighting antimicrobial resistance, and our Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship Initiative team (arsi.umn.edu) is proud to be a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention #BeAntibioticsAware partner for U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week. Working together through a One Health approach, we must improve antibiotic prescribing and invest in infection prevention actions across human health, animal health, plant health, and the environment. #USAAW24

“It’s looking at how we as a museum can build community, and not just at the college,” Mari Kuennen says. “It’s going beyond that by inspiring new generations of veterinarians and getting people excited and interested in our stories.” The Minnesota Veterinary History Museum has a new location and a new vision for using the past—and present—to inspire the future of veterinary medicine. As part of those efforts, the museum has moved to the second-floor atrium of the Lewis Small Animal Hospital. ?? z.umn.edu/9yvo

“We want to train future providers in both human and animal medicine to think this way[...] We have a lot to learn from each other.” - Dr. Julia Ponder CVM is collaborating with the Medical School and other groups to develop a One Health clinic that will provide care to pets and people under one roof! The UMN has long offered two student-run free clinics: one for human medicine, and one for veterinary medicine. Now, they're piloting for one clinic to do both. z.umn.edu/9xvw
