At 42, Tammy Washington de Sencion faced impossible odds — and chose hope. When she was just 22 weeks pregnant, Tammy was admitted to the University of Maryland Medical Center for a high-risk pregnancy and spent 12 weeks in the hospital. What could have been a time of fear became something else entirely: a season of prayer, celebration, and joy. With the help of her care team, she decorated her room, found strength through faith, and even had a maternity photo shoot right in the hospital. Today, Tammy and her miracle baby, Sydney, are thriving. This is what it means to be UMMS Inspired. ??

Two of our very own clinical leaders have been named among The Baltimore Sun’s 25 Black Marylanders to Watch for 2025, recognized for their dedication to patient care and leadership in their fields. ?? Troy Abernathy, MD, Chief of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center was inspired by a life-changing experience in Ecuador to pursue pediatrics. Now, he serves as a role model for young patients. ?? Taofeek Owonikoko, MD, Director of the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, remains committed to patient care while leading efforts to improve outcomes for those facing cancer. At UMMS, we are proud to have leaders who push the boundaries of medicine while making a lasting impact on the communities we serve.
