The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) was created in 1984 when the state-owned University Hospital became a private, nonprofit organization. It has evolved into a multi-hospital system with academic, community and specialty service missions reaching every part of the state and beyond. UMMS is a national and regional referral center for trauma, cancer care, neurocare, cardiac care, women's and children's health and physical rehabilitation. It also has one of the world's largest kidney transplant programs, as well as scores of other programs that improve the physical and mental health of thousands of people daily. At 42, Tammy Washington de Sencion faced impossible odds — and chose hope. When she was just 22 weeks pregnant, Tammy was admitted to the University of Maryland Medical Center for a high-risk pregnancy and spent 12 weeks in the hospital. What could have been a time of fear became something else entirely: a season of prayer, celebration, and joy. With the help of her care team, she decorated her room, found strength through faith, and even had a maternity photo shoot right in the hospital. Today, Tammy and her miracle baby, Sydney, are thriving. This is what it means to be UMMS Inspired. ??

UMMS awarded a $500,000 grant to the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to support STEM education programs at schools across Maryland, including Piccowaxen Middle School. The initiative provides resources, training, and hands-on tools to spark creativity and inspire students in underserved communities. Dr. Stephen Smith, Chief Medical Officer at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, recently joined school board members, staff, and students at Piccowaxen to celebrate the program's launch.
