What an unforgettable experience volunteering at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy with the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology! Special Olympics community members from 100+ counties came together to celebrate inclusion and the pure love of sports. Volunteering alongside such dedicated Special Olympics athletes, coaches, clinicians, and disability advocates was incredible. As volunteers in the Healthy Athletes Program, we had the opportunity to interact with many teams to ensure they received proper medical care and check-ups before their competition began. I am lucky to have participated in not only the Michigan Special Olympics State games earlier this winter, but also apply what I learned on an intentional level in Turino. Throughout the competitions, each country also exchanged pins with one another. My pins will continue to serve as reminders of the Special Olympics community, and each hold lasting memories from meaningful interactions and conversations that I had with athletes and coaches. I look forward to continuing to work with Special Olympics at the University of Michigan, and am excited to apply what I learned through this experience to my Movement Science studies, research interests, and other endeavors! #InclusionRevolution #SpecialOlympics #UniversityofMichigan #Kinesiology #Turin2025 #goblue

Research Seminar: "Accelerating Impact: Resource Mobilization and Innovation in Sport for Development" Per G. Svensson, PhD Associate Professor, Sport Management Louisiana State University Friday, March 21 10-11 a.m. SKB 2080 Light refreshments will be served RSVP: myumi.ch/ny52k Abstract:? The field of sport for development and peace has attracted significant attention and has become increasingly formalized during the past 25-30 years. These types of organizations intentionally leverage sport for the purpose of achieving a set of social change-focused outcomes. The aim of this presentation is to share my personal journey of seeking to help such community-based sport organizations better serve their social missions. First, I will highlight the unique context of sport for development and peace organizations for studying resource mobilization and organizational capacity. Second, I will explore how these sport organizations have enabled important advances on social innovation within resource-constrained environments. Third, I will discuss the development of experimental ways for advancing knowledge and developing more impactful ways for supporting the future generation of sport for social change organizations. Last, I will reflect on my experience in publishing across top-ranked journals both within and outside of the sport management discipline on non-mainstream topics and contexts. In doing so, I aim to identify key lessons learned for accelerating impact both in practice and in scholarship through sport management research. Additionally, I will endeavor to identify expected future trends in flagship journals within sport management.?

I'm always impressed by the ability of my students who compete on (or work for) athletic teams to balance the demands of their sport with the rigors of academics at the University of Michigan. This "Day In The Life" article by Anna Miller about Josh Eernisse gives you a glimpse into this rigorous balancing act. https://lnkd.in/g7BU_M85
