Fall 2024 was a total success!! Congratulations to our phenomenal cohort!!! ??????????????????????????
When Zoe Mutombo and I sat down and talked about the vision for UMiami Black in Business at the University of Miami Herbert Business School, I’m not sure that either of us thought it would have achieved the success that it did this semester. We intentionally selected a cohort of talented Black UM scholars, who shared through their thoughtfully written essays what being “Black in Business” meant to them and what they hoped for out of a program like this. Congratulations Farid Mawanda Kamara Okonkwo Sydney Weaver Yohanna Getahun Theodros Fekade Saige Thompson Hailey Alston Channon Love Jackson Ori Trinity Williams Sky Philpott Lauren Lewis, Nicholas Hand Kayla Humphrey ???????????? Last night, those students presented their final projects that examined a plethora of phenomenons that exist in the corporate world that impact Black professionals. Everything from texturism vs. imposter syndrome to code switching and the importance of showing up as your authentic self was discussed. Not only did our students present the problem, but as with everything we do, they analyzed these issues and came up with amazing solutions to address the problem, along with strategic plans for implementation. I am so incredibly proud of all of our Black in Business Scholars!! ????????Thank you to Dean Paul A. Pavlou, Associate Dean Roger Barascout, Dr. Linda Neider , Garth Birch, Karen D. Harris, Associate Dean Karoline Mortensen, Samantha “Sam” Palmer-Shields and Don Donelson for supporting us last night! Your presence was so appreciated. Also shout out to Sebastian!!! Go Canes!!! Thank you to Mackenzie Sands ?? for your professionalism!! We can’t wait to share your work!! Our students were all gifted with a professional headshot photo session! Book Mackenzie today! She is the best! ?????????? To my amazing E-Board, President Zoe Mutombo, and my VP’s Abolaji (BJ) Oke, Jaell-Ann Auguste and Malakiyah Fairclough ?????????????????????????????????????????? you all exemplified true student leadership throughout this semester and really showed what a high-performance team looks like!! Thank you!! ?? Thanks again to all of our phenomenal speakers!! Guess what!! We get to do again for Spring 2025!! If you missed out on the first round, it’s ok!! There is power in numbers!!
What a night!! UMiami Black in Business focused on the importance of networking and financial literacy. Who doesn’t want to be rich right???? The question is how do gain wealth responsibly. Our guests LaFonda Willis, Esq., Joshua Numa of the Miami Bayside Foundation and Dr. Egheosa Igbinoba all had amazing advice that will lead our cohort down a path of financial success. We discussed credit, investing and understanding that there is a wealth of resources available for business owners of color. Don’t be afraid to make connections, that is how we build community and that’s how we share opportunities. Every speaker we have had this semester has carried this theme through! There is power in networking! I am so incredibly proud of everything my team and I (Zoe Mutombo, Abolaji (BJ) Oke, Malakiyah Fairclough and Jaell-Ann Auguste) were able to accomplish this semester!! Career Readiness!!! Are You Ready???
We are so excited for our upcoming UMiami Black in Business meeting, featuring our esteemed speaker, Oluwajoba Odediran, MPH, MA, the Associate Director of Career Readiness at the University of Miami’s Toppel Career Center! Joba has been making waves at Toppel since 2022, where she supervises and trains peer career coaches, ensuring that students receive the guidance they need to succeed. With her extensive knowledge and dedication, she facilitates outreach to the University of Miami community, connecting students with vital resources like Cane2Cane and Custom Career Content. As a proud alum of the University, Joba holds a Master of Arts in International Administration and a Master of Public Health. Her passion for mentorship and commitment to empowering students to achieve their career goals truly sets her apart. This is an amazing opportunity to hear from Joba as she shares insights on career readiness, mentorship, and strategies to navigate the professional landscape. ?? Food for thought!!! ?? 65% of jobs are filled through networking. (LinkedIn, 2020) ?? Only 20% of applicants receive a response from their job applications. (Jobvite, 2021) ?? It takes an average of 6-9 months to find a job. (Glassdoor, 2022) It is important that we have these discussions, especially as it relates to our underrepresented student population, so they are well equipped with the tools and resources necessary to navigate their career path post-graduation. Looking forward to seeing our Fall 2024 cohort there! ???? #BlackInBusiness #CareerDevelopment #Mentorship #Networking #UniversityOfMiami #ToppelCareerCenter #Empowerment #UniversityofMiami #MiamiHerbertBusinessSchool #MHBS

To say tonight was a success in an understatement. I am incredibly humbled that our Black in Business cohort not only weathered the hurricane ??but also brought that Miami Hurricane spirit ???????? with them! We had a full turnout and Garth Birch and Karen D. Harris nailed it! Mr. Birch got our cohort focused on what it means to move “From Graduation to Greatness” by providing them with the career building tools and resources that will set them up for success. They learnt about who they are, the disparities that exist and the opportunities that lie ahead if they understand how to “Handle Hard Better”. As a MGT100 lecturer, we lay the foundation for resume and LinkedIn building, but tonight was about understanding what you bring to the table and doing everything in your power to be a positive representation of self not only on paper but also in person…aka a walking resume! Karen D. Harris closed us out with some words of wisdom…know your worth and be willing to advocate for yourself! What a phenomenal time we had. The questions were strategic and meaningful and the conversations were proof that all our students were absorbing the information they heard tonight! Thank you Dr. Kesha D. Grayson for coming and showing UMiami Black in Business some love!!
