The ARLIS In The Moment (ITM) Team hosted a two-day workshop last week to support the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)'s ITM program. The workshop, titled “ITM’s Autonomy and Decision Making: Battlefield Triage and Beyond,” assembled ITM researchers and a community of experts to explore the ethical, legal, and societal implications of new technologies and capabilities. Experts from fields including military medicine, air combat, autonomy, human-AI alignment, ethics, cognitive science, and law shared their insights and experiences.

The UARC for the Human Domain -- providing sociotechnical solutions for hard security and intelligence challenges.
关于我们
The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS), based at the University of Maryland College Park, was established in 2018 as a long-term strategic asset for research and development in artificial intelligence, information engineering, and human systems. One of only 14 designated Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) in the nation, ARLIS conducts both classified and unclassified applied research and works to serve the US Government and its defense security and intelligence communities as an independent and objective trusted agent. Critical to generating robust analysis and trusted tools in the human domain is the ability to pull together true multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams, grounded both in the technical state of the art and a direct understanding of the complex challenges faced by the defense security and intelligence enterprise. Our renowned research team includes engineers, psychologists, computer scientists, anthropologists, cognitive scientists, political scientists, and linguists, working together with former defense operators and policy makers.

The Information Competition Simulator (ICS) is a cutting-edge training tool designed by ARLIS researchers to address the growing threat of information warfare. By integrating social science research, ICS simulates human behavior and reactions to stimuli — integrating biases, interests, and cultural identities—within large populations. It enables realistic training for both offensive and defensive operations in the information environment. Check out our new video on the Information Competition Simulator:

Craig Lawrence, PhD., Dr. Brian Pierce and Erin Fitzgerald-Rey represented ARLIS at DARPA’s first UARC Fair on Oct. 2 in Arlington, Va. Thank you Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the opportunity to showcase ARLIS's commitment to fostering strategic collaborations in research and technology.
Our Contracts Management Office recently hosted its first University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) Fair to give agency program managers more insights into the core competencies and capabilities each UARC offers, and spark conversations about how UARCs could best support future programs. ??Goal: Strengthen collaboration with entities that serve as trusted agents for government support. ??Up next: Stay tuned for Spring 2025 programming, including a similar event with Federally Funded Research and Development Centers. In the meantime, we have a wealth of info about DARPA’s acquisition innovation on our CMO website (https://lnkd.in/eVVajuwt) and you can hear more about how our contracting approach is key to creating breakthrough technologies for national security on Episode 82 of the Voices from DARPA podcast https://lnkd.in/g554cBp. #govcon #contractsmanagement
