?? Strengthening Transatlantic Ties! ?? We had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Diana Barros, Senior Technician in the Research and Projects Service at the Universidade do Porto, as she engaged in a series of inspiring discussions and explorations here at UMBC. Her visit from October 14-18 was packed with meetings and tours aimed at fostering collaboration and innovation across research and academic initiatives. Highlights included: - Meetings with leadership in International Education & Global Engagement, Research and Creative Achievement, and Strategic Research Initiatives. - A comprehensive tour of UMBC’s research facilities, including the bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park, the Molecular Characterization and Analysis Complex, and the UMBC Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building. - Engaging sessions with departments in Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Natural Sciences, underscoring the synergies in research between UMBC and the University of Porto. Adam Holden, CGE’s inaugural Director of Global Partnerships and Outreach, recently embarked on a successful recruitment journey across Vietnam, expanding UMBC’s presence and connecting with future students! During his visit, Adam engaged with: ?? 19 high schools in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Hai Phong ?? 250+ prospective students at various stages of their educational journey ?? Key partners including IDP and New World Education in Ho Chi Minh City, fostering crucial partnerships to support UMBC's international engagement efforts The tour also included two counselor dinners and a public expo, deepening UMBC's reach in Vietnam. The CGE Education Abroad and Special Programs teams were honored to host the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (Gilman) Advisor Workshop on October 25th in partnership with Institute of International Education and the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs. The workshop hosted 46 participants from across the country for a day full of sessions focusing on how to best support undergraduate students when applying for a Gilman Scholarship, after being accepted, and as alumni. Thanks to our Education Abroad team Katie Heird, Brian Souders, Ph. D., Alicyn Curtis, and Samantha Sullivan for sharing your expertise and helping other advisors and university staff & faculty better support students in their dream to study abroad!

We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Anthony (Tony) Ryan from Nanzan University’s Faculty of Foreign Studies, Department of British & American Studies to UMBC on August 30, 2024! Dr. Ryan's visit provided an incredible opportunity for cross-cultural engagement and collaboration with our team at the Center for Global Engagement. ?? Exciting Collaboration in Global Health and Emergency Medical Education! On August 30, 2024, UMBC had the honor of hosting a delegation from Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU) from Japan as part of a dynamic exchange of ideas and best practices in emergency medical systems (EMS). The delegation, led by Dr. Keisuke Suzuki and accompanied by Mr. Kyohei Kodama and undergraduate paramedic students, engaged in productive discussions with UMBC’s Department of Emergency & Disaster Health Systems (EDHS) and the Center for Global Engagement (CGE). Key highlights of the day included: ?? A deep dive into potential collaborations around EMS education with a focus on common challenges in data integration and emergency care delivery. ??Exploring future opportunities such as the development of exchange programs and joint research initiatives. ?? A tour of UMBC’s campus and meetings with leaders of the English Language Institute (ELI) and Special Programs. We also explored future learning opportunities, including specialized short-term English programs for medical professionals. ?? This visit represents a meaningful step toward fostering global partnerships that will have a lasting impact on EMS education and healthcare systems. ?? Exciting News from the Center for Global Engagement at UMBC? ?? We are delighted to announce a significant milestone in our journey towards international educational collaboration as we welcomed a distinguished delegation from the Kanagawa Association of Private Jr./Sr. High Schools to our campus. ?? It was an honor to host Mr. Seiichi Kudo, Mr. @Yohei Kuroda, Ms. @Miki Sasaki, and their students over two weeks in August as part of a special English and Culture Immersion Program facilitated by UMBC’s English Language Institute (ELI). ?? The highlight of this visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between UMBC and the Kanagawa Association of Private Jr./Sr. High Schools on August 13th.. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in our partnership, as we prepare to implement the Global Achievement Scholarship program for up to 10 students from Kanagawa each year to pursue their Bachelor’s degrees at UMBC. The ceremony featured remarks from Adam Holden, Director of Global Partnerships, as well as insights from UMBC’s leadership, including Dr. Manfred van Dulmen, Provost & Senior Vice President, and Dr. David Di Maria, Ed.D., Associate Vice Provost for International Education. ??
