This week, UMass Memorial Health and South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC), highlighted the impact this collaboration has had on helping homeless people. The collaboration started earlier this year, which provides essential services for people experiencing homelessness but are also in need of some medical assistance. "When I think about the complexity of the medical challenges that the patients we've treated here, how complex their medical issues are and how complex their logistical and mobility issues are, I really am in awe of the fact that they were able to manage any of that before they had a stable, safe environment to live in," said Dr. John Broach, who is a co-director of the program. Our UMass Memorial Health caregivers are supporting patients through some of the hardest and most unsettling moments of their life as they navigate the roller coaster of emotions that come with a cancer diagnosis. And, on the other side of it all, stands a survivor who is undoubtedly #StrongerThanCancer.
It's been four years since Alesia Tringal was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. This survivor credits the exceptional caliber of the team of caregivers at UMass Memorial Health for helping her through, who have enabled her to enjoy every day and every moment so much more. “There is an amazing capacity for the body to heal," adds Alesia. "I'm active and living life. I even ran a race a couple months ago and placed fourth in my age group. And, I couldn't have done it without the care, compassion and level of expertise of the UMass Memorial Health Breast Center team.” Learn all about UMMH's Breast Cancer Center: https://lnkd.in/ex3ACNEF #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #StrongerThanCancer

Dr. Teresa Pazdral, Chief of Emergency Medicine at UMass Memorial Health - Marlborough Hospital, explains when to choose urgent care versus the emergency department. She says extremities versus the core is a good general way to understand which you should go to. Core issues like chest pain, severe headaches with rash or fever, and neurological symptoms (e.g., slurred speech, drooping face) need emergency department attention. Meanwhile, external issues like rashes or burns can be handled by urgent care.?
