What an incredible gathering yesterday getting the opportunity to thank Worcester Common Ground for all they do for our community and their committed partnership to help ensure that our most marginalized and vulnerable community members are given equitable opportunities and access. Mario J. Florez,?Senior Director of Community Benefits,?addressed the crowd at the groundbreaking ceremony saying, "We're all aware of the housing crisis in our city, state, and nation, and we will continue to lean on our partners to help us find ways to address these barriers in Worcester. Even affordable housing is no longer affordable and units like this at 80% of the area median income are critical in our collaborative effort to help our community members achieve the dream of homeownership and the right to a roof over their head for themselves and their families." Thank you, Worcester Common Ground, the?City of Worcester, MassHousing, and everyone who contributed to this?UMass Memorial Health?Anchor Mission investment! We truly look forward to continuing to partner with you all.

UMass Memorial Health's Family Medicine is celebrating the 50th?anniversary of caring for patients in Central Massachusetts. There are 344 family physicians who work at UMass Memorial Health. Among them is Dr. Ronald Adler, who has cared for four generations of one family during their happiest and most tragic times: “It goes as far back as him taking care of my grandmother, my mother and then me and my kids,” says Kelsey Silva. The first of her four children was also delivered by Dr. Adler. “My oldest daughter, she's 12. She thinks it's pretty cool that the same doctor that delivered me, delivered her.” “There's just been so many interactions where we can joke around and have a good time whether it be a well child visit with the kids or just my primary check up,” says Kelsey, “He's considered as family at this point.”

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Dr. Nura El-Haj,?a?pediatric hematologist/oncologist?at UMass Memorial Medical Center, discusses sickle cell disease. It is a type of blood disorder where patients have abnormally shaped red blood cells which eventually can cause health issues in different parts of the body. It is diagnosed at birth with a blood test. The disease is treated by hematologists with preventive care, which includes helping patients live a healthy lifestyle and monitoring for complications like an increased risk of infection. As patients grow older, they are screened for disease-related problems to the eyes, heart, kidneys and lungs.

Meet Ricardo Rodriguez, a Residential Counselor here at?Community Healthlink Inc. "I grew up in Great Brook Valley surrounded by people with needs. Early on in life, there were times when we did not have things and needed and there were places that were there to help us get along. At these places there were people who I looked up to as heroes; people who assisted with food and other resources. My mom did the best she could raising 6 kids with an 11th grade education and a dad who struggled with addictions. It made me feel like I could give back and help the next generations of kids dealing with mental health and addictions in their families. I decided to dedicate my life with the guidance of my mom, who made it a point to say these services are a blessing and not to be taken granted of. Now, my siblings and I all have college degrees and work in the service field. I pursued a career in healthcare beacuse it is the only thing I ever wanted to do to give back and help just like the heroes in my past. My favorite part of my job over the years has to be when I see real progress; not just getting off the streets but when you see a client really get it and get their life together. Now, one I know volunteers with the homeless and addicted people in his community where he helps run a food bank and offers supplies to them. I like the diverse ways?UMass Memorial Health?offers support, the community, and being part of the system. I’ve been here for 20+ years. When I'm not working, I can often be seen with my grandchildren and family members having fun locally and at?Polar Park." We are inspired by you, Ricardo! #MyUMassMemorialMark
