A new triage tool is now in use in the Maternity Center that is designed to connect our sickest patients with immediate care! Caregivers cut the ribbon on the Maternal Fetal Triage Index, or MFTI, an obstetrical acuity tool developed by the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses. When a patient presents at the Maternity Center, they are registered and then brought to a dedicated MFTI room that is staffed 24/7 by a Registered Nurse. The nurse follows the assessment to determine the level of acuity and the most appropriate care plan. Prior to the installation of MFTI, patients were seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. "According to our preliminary data, from the time a patient registered to the time of the first blood pressure read prior to MFTI took about 22 minutes. After we implemented it, it was down to about 15 minutes. We know in our high-acuity population, minutes are critical in getting care to patients. Seven minutes can be a life for someone. I feel really proud of that," said Danielle Ferguson, RN, Interim Assistant Nurse Manager of 4 East. "This is a multidisciplinary effort," said Dr. Benjamin D. Hamar, Maternity Center Director. "The thing I'm most excited about from a provider standpoint is making sure we can see those acute patients so they don't sit in chairs and wait and it allows us to figure out who needs to go straight through." ??: From left: Teresa Blass, RN, Manager of L&D and Postpartum; Benjamin Hamar, MD, Maternity Center Director; Irene Weeks, MSN, RN, Sr. Director, Women & Neonatal Services; Danielle Ferguson, RN, Interim Assistant Nurse Manager of 4 East; Michelle O'Rourke DNP, RN, CCRN-K, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer; Maria Narducci, MD, Medical Director for OB Traige/Postpartum

It's heartwarming to see caregivers come together and share moments of comradery and gratitude. The catchy saying "Teamwork makes the dream work" really rings true for these hard workers on our University Campus, especially at the end of a lengthy, yet gratifying, work stretch. Tag your team in the comments to show them how much they mean to you! #Teamwork #WorkFamily ??: Jonathan Min, UMass Memorial Medical Center Hospitalist

Acknowledging that trauma affects children is not a new concept, but the way pediatricians address it is evolving, according to Dr. Heather Forkey of UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center.
