Congratulations on this work, Kiam!
Research Analyst at the Umass Donahue Institute EPPR | Master of Public Policy and Administration | Affordable Housing Advocate
So excited to share this work I got to be a part of. I had the privilege to serve as lead author on this policy recommendations report for my community. Here is the full press release: https://lnkd.in/e9Ja8XVj Easthampton, MA - The Easthampton Affordable and Fair Housing Partnership is proud to announce that its comprehensive Zoning Ordinance Recommendations Report has been referred to the City Council Ordinance Committee following a presentation to the City Council on December 18, 2024. As the city faces an escalating affordable housing crisis, the partnership’s bold vision for zoning reform will help to guide the conversation and support the development of more affordable, walkable, and sustainable housing options across Easthampton. “These recommendations are a bold but pragmatic vision to encourage more housing options, lower costs, and ensure that our neighborhoods develop in a way that reflects Easthampton’s values of affordability, walkability, and sustainability,” said Kiam Jamrog-McQuaid, lead author of the report and a member of the Affordable and Fair Housing Partnership. “Our zoning needs to reflect our current housing needs and the values of a community we want to be in the future—not just the policy priorities from 50 years ago that created the current requirements for financially and ecologically unsustainable suburban sprawl.” The report recommendations include reconsidering duplex construction and conversion restrictions, removing oversized lot area requirements that incentivize larger, more expensive homes, and increasing walkability in residential neighborhoods by allowing limited mixed uses by special permit approval. With the first Ordinance Committee meeting scheduled to review these proposals on February 25, 2025, a selected group from the Easthampton Affordable and Fair Housing Partnership will collaborate with the Ordinance Committee and Planning Board over the next several months to refine and advance recommendations to the full City Council. Meet Shannon McAndrew, MPPA ’21, who now works as a Management Specialist at the Town of Concord Town Manager’s Office. “The program prepared me for my role in several ways, but one of the ways I think that I benefited the most from was the use of case studies in coursework, which prepared me for the “real life” situations,” says Shannon.
