The Urban Land Institute (ULI) stands at the forefront of the land use and real estate industry, a steadfast leader in best practices for a changing world. For seven decades, ULI has been a unique and trusted forum where members come together to share and exchange ideas, information, and experiences-to shape tomorrow's horizon and improve the way communities grow. At the state and local levels, ULI's District Councils work hand in hand in their own marketplaces under the leadership of an executive steering committee.

I immensely enjoyed getting an in-depth overview of Hazelwood Green from the fantastic ladies in charge via the Urban Land Institute Pittsburgh Women's Initiative. The ALMONO partnership of Richard K Mellon Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, along with RIDC, U3, University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Hazelwood Local, and Tishman Speyer are working together to bring "open minds, open spaces" to this 178-acre site. BioForge is under construction and is being made possible with a $100M award from RK Mellon and over $ 120M from the University of Pittsburgh for core and shell. This biomanufacturing facility aims to activate the life sciences ecosystem, attract industry, define Pittsburgh as an international leader in life sciences, and bring education and economic opportunities to the community. Elevate Bio is the?anchor tenant and will occupy 70%, while BioForge LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of U Pitt, will occupy 30%. BioForge will host 18-36 month projects with multi-disciplinary teams to advance to licensing deals, funding, or spin-offs. CMU is building a Robotics Innovation Center designed with input from its researchers to ensure the facility meets the needs to deliver advancements. The new 150,000 SF building with 1.5 acres of outdoor space will contain wet labs, a drone cage, motion-capture labs, fabrication space, a water tank, high bay space, running room, exhibition space, a cafe, and a public event space. Affordable and mixed-income housing is planned to take advantage of the adjacent "learn," "train," "work," "play," and "transportation" amenities. All involved parties are helping to build the Hazelwood community, which suffers from a loss of critical population, a high vacancy rate, a higher-than-average unemployment rate, and an aging housing stock. Construction is utilizing the local workforce, and training programs will be ongoing. For more information, visit: https://lnkd.in/ehKe7JvC

Earlier this year, wildfires in Los Angeles caused widespread destruction, displacing families and damaging homes, schools, and businesses. In response, ULI Los Angeles, UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate, and the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate have released Project Recovery—a comprehensive roadmap to guide rebuilding efforts and strengthen the city’s long-term resilience. Approximately 100 leading experts, including ULI members, specializing in land use, real estate, infrastructure, and economic development have volunteered their time and expertise to the report – offering best practices and actionable recommendations to not only accelerate the recovery process in LA but also serve as a blueprint to help cities navigate recovery when impacted by climate-related disasters. This effort was made possible by the generous contributions of ULI members through the ULI Foundation. Read our press release here: https://ow.ly/kKRt50Vo7oC
