How can we build a healthier, happier and more inclusive screen industry? In the latest episode of The ScreenSkills Podcast, we put the workforce at the heart of the conversation. We speak to Marcus Ryder, CEO of The Film and TV Charity about the #mentalhealth of the industry's workforce in light of their #LookingGlass survey findings. He tells us about some of the alarming results, how things can be improved and shares some of the measures already having a positive impact. We also learn about the #HETVSkillsFund's #LeadersofTomorrow programme, an inclusion initiative designed to improve the diversity of those in leadership roles across the sector. Programme manager Hannah Green demystifies how the programme works, while members of the new and previous cohorts tell us how the programme is helping develop their careers in high-end TV. To mark #InternationalWomensDay, ScreenSkills has launched a bursary programme, supported by the Adobe Foundation, to empower women from minority ethnic backgrounds in the screen industries. Applications for the Coaching Career Accelerator 2025 are now open! As part of ScreenSkills’ commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, this initiative offers up to £1,000 in financial support for coaching and career development - helping to break down barriers and foster greater inclusion in the industry. Coaching can be transformative, equipping individuals with confidence and strategic guidance to progress in their careers and step into leadership roles. This bursary will support recipients in developing their skills, expanding their networks, and navigating career pathways in the screen industries. At least one bursary will be awarded for each of ScreenSkills’ Skills Funds: Animation, Children’s TV, Film, High-end TV, and Unscripted TV. By reducing barriers to career progression, ScreenSkills aims to ensure the UK screen industries benefit from a wider range of perspectives and experiences. ?? To mark International Women’s Day, I am proud to announce that ScreenSkills is launching a bursary programme, supported by the Adobe Foundation, to empower women from minority ethnic backgrounds in the screen industries. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, providing financial support for coaching and career development to help break down barriers and foster greater inclusion in our industry. We will be offering one bursary for each of the Skills Funds: Animation, Children’s TV, Film, High-end TV and Unscripted TV. Covering the cost of career coaching, this support will help recipients develop their skills, expand their networks and navigate career pathways in the screen industries. Coaching can be transformative, equipping individuals with the confidence and strategic guidance to accelerate progress in their careers. Women, and in particular those from minority ethnic backgrounds are underrepresented in leadership positions, and coaching can be one way to help individuals progress. This year’s International Women’s Day theme, Accelerate Action, highlights the urgency of achieving gender equality. At the current rate, full gender parity is projected to take until 2158 - approximately five generations - according to the World Economic Forum. That is simply too long. We must act now to ensure that underrepresented women in our sector have access to the support they need to thrive. With the generous support of the Adobe Foundation, this new bursary programme will help reduce some barriers to career progression. At ScreenSkills we are working to ensure that the UK screen industries benefit from a wider range of perspectives and experiences. Empowering women and especially those from minority ethnic backgrounds essential for the growth and diversification of our industry. This programme is one of the ways we are putting our commitment to inclusion into action. These new bursaries complement ScreenSkills wider bursaries offer supported by #BFI and the Skills Funds that are available through our website and underlines our commitment to supporting professionals from under-represented communities in screen. I encourage anyone eligible to apply for this this opportunity, and please share with your networks. For more details on how to apply, visit the ScreenSkills website from Weds 12th March this week. #IWD2025 #accelerateaction #screenskills #adobe #intersectional

At the start of the year, we welcomed seventeen talented professionals from across the UK's high-end TV (HETV) industry to our fourth HETV #LeadersOfTomorrow cohort. Leaders of Tomorrow is the #HETVSkillsFund's three-year, inclusion-focused programme that's designed to equip mid-level professionals with the skills and experience needed to step into leadership roles, helping to build a stronger, more diverse industry. Chosen by industry peers as future senior leaders, this new cohort will now embark on a three-year structured training journey, gaining access to: - A dedicated mentor/champion - The Leaders of Tomorrow VIP list - high-end TV industry experts offering tailored one-to-one support, advice, and expertise - Funded on-the-job learning opportunities each year for up to three years - Bespoke grade- and skills-specific training - PR exposure, industry networking opportunities, and key introductions - Funding towards relevant equipment or software - A range of coaching, leadership, and management training sessions Each Leader of Tomorrow (LoT) is nominated by a senior peer who recognises their talent and potential. Louise Mutter, Managing Director of Lookout Point Ltd, who nominated new LoT Angela Effanga, shared: “I’m so thrilled that Angela will be part of the next LoT cohort. She has been a great team member, each show having its own complexities and Angela works hard, is thorough in her tasks, asks good questions, has passion for the project and does it all with great chat and a sense of humour. All the natural skills of a leader, can’t wait to follow her future.” DoP Laurie Rose nominated Yorkshire-based LoT candidate Kim Vinegrad: “Kim was my focus puller for many years and on some of my most formative work. An utterly reliable technician who fast became an essential part of my working process, she has the natural instincts of a storyteller. I never needed to explain what I wanted she just knew and as she’s come to realise her potential to move forward and really exploit her innate talent, I believe this scheme is a perfect platform for that. She will explode into this opportunity and relish every second. Kim is my third nominee to the LOT scheme.” We welcome each of the cohort and wish them luck in their time on the programme! Born in Denmark, Maja Jensen came to Britain in 2011 to study film and television at university: “after three years of studying the theory of film I wanted to get my hands dirty”. Having also obtained a master’s degree in film, she joined a ScreenSkills trainee programme with Grips Branch and has been working consistently ever since stepping up to grip in 2019. Maja is in something of a unique position working as a grip. The role has traditionally been a male dominated one, with Maja well aware of the scarcity of women in her department: “I am currently finishing up working on my Level 3 Qualification and when finished, I will be the first ever female Level 3 grip”. For International Women's Day this year, we spoke to Maja about her journey, the challenges she’s faced, and the importance of representation and resilience.
