  • Valuing difference is fundamental to the pursuit of excellence in research and innovation. A recent visit to India by UKRI Chief Executive Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser provided rich examples of why this is the case. The strong partnership and collaboration between the UK and India has created space for different thinking and perspectives, making breakthroughs more likely. India and the UK both place research and innovation (R&I) at the heart of their economies and societies, and the role of UKRI and the Government of India is to build an R&I system by everyone, for everyone. A flexible, dynamic and inclusive R&I system helps foster innovation. We need to welcome a wide spectrum of ideas, expertise, and ways of thinking. A system that is too rigid or uniform limits new ways of thinking, interdisciplinary connections, and problem-solving. Last month, Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser hosted a high tea at the British High Commission in New Delhi to celebrate the India-UKRI partnership. The event was attended by researchers from India and the UK who are working in a wide range of collaborative partnerships. Their work is empowered by diversity – different disciplines, different approaches and different experiences. Diverse career paths such as career breaks, movement between disciplines, and non-traditional pathways present opportunities to enrich the R&I system. This is an area that UKRI has been making progress in, for example by revising and simplifying project role types and by introducing the Resume for Research and Innovation. We have also been working to remove conscious and unconscious bias in peer review. Read more in this blog post: https://orlo.uk/71YzG

    • A quote from Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser:

"As I saw during my time in India, it was those people who were embracing diverse thinking and bringing different disciplines together that were making bold strides forward in their research and seeing their innovations transform communities, industries, and economies.

"Truly to thrive through research and innovation we must commit to inclusive diversity, we must continue to shape a new system, and we must welcome disagreeing creatively."

Seven new research hubs will work to ensure the UK's transition to net zero also protects and promotes health. The hubs, funded by UKRI and NIHR, are focused around five challenge areas at the intersection of health and the environment: ?? transport and the built environment ?? the indoor environment ?? sustainable diets ?? extreme weather ?? decarbonising health and social care pathways Each hub will receive up to £6 million to deliver high impact research focused on reducing health inequalities. They will also undertake research into developing a standardised way to measure trade-offs and unintended consequences as part of these measures. Head to the UKRI website to find out more.
