Valuing difference is fundamental to the pursuit of excellence in research and innovation. A recent visit to India by UKRI Chief Executive Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser provided rich examples of why this is the case. The strong partnership and collaboration between the UK and India has created space for different thinking and perspectives, making breakthroughs more likely. India and the UK both place research and innovation (R&I) at the heart of their economies and societies, and the role of UKRI and the Government of India is to build an R&I system by everyone, for everyone. A flexible, dynamic and inclusive R&I system helps foster innovation. We need to welcome a wide spectrum of ideas, expertise, and ways of thinking. A system that is too rigid or uniform limits new ways of thinking, interdisciplinary connections, and problem-solving. Last month, Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser hosted a high tea at the British High Commission in New Delhi to celebrate the India-UKRI partnership. The event was attended by researchers from India and the UK who are working in a wide range of collaborative partnerships. Their work is empowered by diversity – different disciplines, different approaches and different experiences. Diverse career paths such as career breaks, movement between disciplines, and non-traditional pathways present opportunities to enrich the R&I system. This is an area that UKRI has been making progress in, for example by revising and simplifying project role types and by introducing the Resume for Research and Innovation. We have also been working to remove conscious and unconscious bias in peer review. Read more in this blog post: https://orlo.uk/71YzG

The UK is playing a pivotal role in six international projects harnessing biology to tackle major societal challenges. Programmes like Global Centers 2024 demonstrate the strength of international partnerships in improving lives and creating prosperity.
Six UK teams are joining a global effort to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges through the power of biology. UK teams are to play a pivotal role in all six projects funded through the NSF Global Centers 2024 competition, joining forces with experts from the US, Canada, Japan, Finland and the Republic of Korea. By harnessing the power of biodiversity and biofoundaries, they will work to unlock innovative bio-based solutions to global issues. The ambitious projects range from developing sustainable alternatives to pesticides, through to transforming waste carbon into valuable chemicals. Congratulations to all the UK teams!
