On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we pause to reflect on the lives lost to anti-transgender violence and discrimination. Each name, each story, represents a person who deserved love, respect, and safety. Black trans people are disproportionately affected by violence, harassment, and a lack of access to healthcare, employment, and safety. Their voices have too often been silenced, their stories overlooked, and their lives taken far too soon. As we remember those we’ve lost, we also acknowledge the ongoing struggles still present in the transgender community. We must stand together, advocate for justice, and create a world where every trans person can live without fear. Their lives mattered, their legacies live on, and we will continue to honor them through action, love, and unwavering support.

At a recent town hall in Martha’s Vineyard, we partnered with Essence Communications Inc. and The Allstate Foundation to shine a light on a critical issue affecting many Black women: financial abuse. This hidden form of control can have devastating effects, isolating victims by limiting their access to money, damaging credit, and sabotaging job opportunities. Our insightful panelists explored the unique barriers that Black women face in seeking support, emphasizing the urgent need to recognize the signs of financial abuse and take action to disrupt its impact. This powerful discussion features our CEO Karma Cottman, the CCO of A Call to Men, Kimya Motley, Sharisse Kimbro, Relationship Abuse Program Officer at The Allstate Foundation & Kimberly Wilson, Senior Editor at Essence. Yesterday, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in Washington, DC. The day was filled with incredible speakers, advocates and survivors. Hearing from remarkable speakers, including our CEO, Karma Cottman, was truly inspiring. Everyone spoke of all that's been accomplished and what is yet to be done. Ujima is thrilled to be on this incredibly important, necessary journey!

When we think of domestic violence, we often picture physical abuse but many forms of violence are concealed. “Shockingly, 78% of Americans do not recognize financial abuse as a form of domestic violence, despite its presence in 99% of abusive relationships. This lack of awareness leaves many victims unable to identify their situation as abusive and uncertain of how to seek help.” -?Essence.com Keep swiping as we share more shocking statistics about financial abuse.
