Health care management is an extremely dynamic and rewarding profession. Individuals who work in this field are challenged to provide the highest quality, most effective health care services to the greatest number of people at the lowest cost. More specifically, Health Management and Policy is concerned with the management of health care organizations, formulation and implementation of health care policy, improving access to health care services, financing health care services, and evaluating the quality and outcomes of health care services. A Health Management and Policy student can pursue a Masters degree in Health Administration (MHA), an Executive Master of Health Administration (EMHA), a Masters degree in Public Health (MPH) with an emphasis in policy, a Master of Science degree in Health Policy (MS), or a Ph.D. in Health Services Research and Policy. MISSION The Department’s mission is to improve health and health services by preparing future leaders for, and advancing knowledge in, health management, policy, and research.

Last week our MHA cohort had the privilege of attending an etiquette dinner led by Jim Leste, FACHE. From navigating place settings to handling formal dining conversations, we learned how to make a polished impression beyond the boardroom. Jim also shared a fun story about attending a themed formal dinner, where guests were actually expected to dress in full costume! (Picture for proof—swipe to see!) While most professional events don’t require armor or elaborate outfits, his insights reminded us that confidence, preparation, and adaptability are just as important as knowing which fork to use. A huge thank you to Jim Leste for sharing his time, expertise, and a few laughs with us! What’s the most unexpected or funny dining experience you’ve had?

????Student Study Highlighted in Recent Article???? An independent study by one of our PhD students, Gulrukh Mehboob, has been featured in a top story from McKnights Long-Term Care News. The article goes into depth on policies adopted during the pandemic regarding nursing staff. In an attempt to tackle the nursing shortage, relaxed certified nurse aide training and licensing requirements went into effect. Mehboob shared her insights revealing the defectiveness of the new policies in improving staffing levels and why adjustments alone are insufficient in addressing the systemic staffing challenges in long-term care.
