On blue sky days, drones fly regularly to collect performance data from our equipment and conduct routine inspections. Following a storm, drones play a more urgent role. “I just inspected about 10 poles in the matter of two minutes,” said Joshua Ward, a Duke Energy unmanned aircraft system pilot. “[Linemen] have to stop at each pole and climb up on a lift, just to look at the top of the pole.” Time saved during the assessment phase can cut restoration times for customers experiencing extended outages. As part of our Florida restoration efforts following Hurricane #Milton, Ward has been on the ground – with drone in air – gathering critical information to help crews perform their jobs faster and safer. In recent weeks, drones were deployed into the mountainous terrain of western North Carolina – made nearly inaccessible by #Helene’s destruction – to inspect damaged equipment, helping crews manage difficult conditions.

  • As we are very aware, wildfires pose an escalating threat to power utilities, with aging infrastructure and extreme weather events intensifying risks. Vegetation encroachment, equipment failure, and old hardware are among the most common factors to blame for utility-related wildfire ignitions. The data is clear; incidents like these and many others will continue to happen and that is a scary notion. The new reality is that utilities in every part of the country are likely to cause or respond to some kind of natural disaster that causes mass outages. With tons of money, jobs, and human lives on the line, preparedness is key. We say this not to terrify, but to clarify the urgency of the moment. The good news is that investment in risk management now can prepare utilities for the worst! As we are very aware, wildfires pose an escalating threat to power utilities, with aging infrastructure and extreme weather events intensifying risks. Vegetation encroachment, equipment failure, and old hardware are among the most common factors to blame for utility-related wildfire ignitions. ? Key topics include:? ? Track asset condition and hardware: know what equipment is failing and where so that you can respond before risks become reality.? ? Real-time data synchronization: Watch as field teams report and upload data live into UNITI. Get an up-to-the-minute report so field teams can coordinate efficiently.? ? Log external factors such as vegetation encroachment and schedule trimming efforts to avoid line contact. Track work-scheduled and work-completed by contractors.? ?
