Last weekend, Biostatistics faculty hosted a Data Science in Health camp, introducing undergraduate juniors, seniors, and recent grads to the emerging challenges at the intersection of Big Data, Statistics, and Human Health ???? Using popular software packages R and HELIX, students were able to explore concepts of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and learned how to manage, analyze, and visualize health data. This September marked a special Newborn Screening Awareness Month, as Newborn Screening in Illinois approaches its 60th anniversary, helping detect genetic and metabolic conditions in newborns to launch early interventions. ? “The public health community often talks about its responsibility to [each other…]?to speak for those who have no voice, to take action to save lives and to take theoretical knowledge and apply it to practice.
