In The News: UICOMP faculty member Dr. Sunita Ferns and her team made history by successfully implanting an extravascular implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (EV-ICD) in a toddler, a first of its kind. This groundbreaking device, typically used in older patients, was the best option for managing the young patient's abnormal heart rhythms. Medical students are in Brazil as part of the Equity Innovation Medicine (EquIMED) scholarly concentration program. The three-week global immersion allows students to apply the tools of innovation, clinical experience, and knowledge of medicine to solve fundamental problems all while gaining understanding of local healthcare, society and culture. Today, students are touring a pop-up hospital funded by the Brazilian government to provide patients with access to primary care and diagnostic testing before surgery. https://lnkd.in/gYjH7TjE

Medical students in the APAMSA (Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association) group attended the Spring Food Festival, an annual event held at the Thien Tam Buddhist Temple in Peoria with free vegetarian Vietnamese food. This is a special event to honor health values and the art of vegetarian cooking. It encourages guiding people to a gentle life in accordance with the compassionate philosophy of Buddhism.
