UIC’s Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS) in the School of Public Health works to educate individuals, communities, and organizations about the environment and its hazards. EOHS teaches students how to protect people from environmental hazards in the air, water, soil, and food. Students learn how to anticipate, identify and assess these hazards; recommend and evaluate measures to reduce exposure; and implement and evaluate programs designed to protect and promote health equity and environmental justice. The UIC School of Public Health is the only CEPH-accredited school of public health in Illinois, and the division features the ANSAC-ABET-accredited Industrial Hygiene concentration toward Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credentials. EOHS also offers funded traineeships for students through the Great Lakes Center for Occupational Health and Safety.

EOHS is proud of the work that our faculty, staff, and students put out into the world. Recently, the @uic_center_for_healthy_work, (part of UIC EOHS) published this detailed report, please give it a look. The Greater Lawndale Healthy Work (GLHW) Project located in the Center for Health Work at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) School of Public Health, a decade-long community-based participatory research (CBPR) project that aims to create a culture of healthy work in Little Village and North Lawndale, recently implemented discussions with community members about the root causes of community violence in response to community members requesting our responsiveness to this issue. The GLHW Project hosted two facilitated community-academic forums in November 2023 and April 2024 to provide space for community leaders to share their crucial analysis of the root causes of community violence and for community and academic partners to share their thoughts about the barriers, enablers, and their vision for safe communities rooted in abolitionist strategies. ? The GLHW Project produced a summary report to communicate high level takeaways that emerged from the forums to inform the work of community-based organizations, institutions, and academia, recognizing that community members directly affected by violence are powerfully positioned to imagine, guide, and construct life-affirming worlds. ?
