Forgive the late night post, but are you dreaming of graduate school? Dreaming of a healthier community, healthier environment, healthier home, or healthier work place? Stop by our monthly EOHS Virtual Fair Express event October 17th @ NOON CST to learn more about the amazing opportunities ahead of you with a public health degree focusing on environmental and occupational health sciences! Consider a career in environmental or occupational health and a graduate degree from UIC’s Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS). UIC EOHS in the School of Public Health works to educate individuals, communities, and organizations about the environment and its hazards. In line with this, EOHS will be hosting a monthly express style (30 minutes) virtual fair to educate potential applicants about graduate programs and future careers. On the third Thursday of each month at 12:00 pm CST to learn more about environmental and occupational health and pose questions about the program or application process. University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) School of Public Health is the only CEPH-accredited school of public health in Illinois, and the division features an Industrial Hygiene concentration accredited by the Applied and Natural Sciences Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org. Completion of this program allows alumni to become a Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP?) ahead of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP?) certification with Board of Certified Safety Professionals and reduces requirements toward the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential. Can’t make it? Send us a message and we can set something up just for you. #thisispublichealth #uic #publichealth #iamih #environmentaljustice #occupationalhealth #environmentalhealth #environmentalscience #climatechange #sustainability #globalhealth #safetyprofessionals

UIC’s Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS) in the School of Public Health works to educate individuals, communities, and organizations about the environment and its hazards. EOHS teaches students how to protect people from environmental hazards in the air, water, soil, and food. Students learn how to anticipate, identify and assess these hazards; recommend and evaluate measures to reduce exposure; and implement and evaluate programs designed to protect and promote health equity and environmental justice. The UIC School of Public Health is the only CEPH-accredited school of public health in Illinois, and the division features the ANSAC-ABET-accredited Industrial Hygiene concentration toward Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credentials. EOHS also offers funded traineeships for students through the Great Lakes Center for Occupational Health and Safety.

Congratulations on another publication Brett Shannon, we are excited to see your continued success. https://lnkd.in/gSBFZRTd #thisispublichealth?#uic?#publichealth?#iamih?#environmentaljustice?#occupationalhealth?#environmentalhealth?#data #environmentalscience
For my Australian colleagues I wanted to share our latest publication --> https://lnkd.in/gSBFZRTd The objective of this research was to compare all recognized work-related elective and emergent hospital presentations treated in an ED or admitted to Illinois hospitals between 2017-2021 to better understand the different needs and interventions related to work-related injuries and illnesses. Our results demonstrate the value of hospital data in occupational surveillance, particularly the importance of integrating and utilizing ED visit data in addition to widely used trauma registry and admissions data.

“Professors: What can Illinois do to better protect workers from inhaling silica dust?” This is the question UIC School of Public Health Professors Linda Forst and Lee Friedman pose in a new op-ed published in the Chicago Tribune in the wake of a new report from OSHA concerning a Chicago countertop manufacturer employee’s lung transplant from severe lung damage caused by inhaling silica dust at work. Currently, public health surveillance for occupational illnesses and injuries occurs through the federally funded Illinois Occupational Surveillance Program at the University of Illinois Chicago’s School of Public Health – but, as Professors Forst and Friedman point out, there is more work to be done. For their full recommendations, read the Tribune article at https://lnkd.in/gct2mAuz

#VisitingScientist Institute hosted Fulbright Specialist Program at Microbiology Lab on "Capacity Building on Water Science Policy Research in Nepal" for a week. A week-long Visiting Scientist Program was focused on following objectives: a) To increase the understanding of researchers at Biomedicum Research Campus member institutes (Kathmandu Research Institute for Biological Sciences, Phutung Research Institute and RIBB) in the areas of environmental epidemiology broadly, with a focus on waterborne disease. b) To promote use of web-based tools by researchers for evaluating the burden of disease in Nepal attributable to inadequate water, sanitation, and hand washing, as well as tools for tracking Nepal’s progress towards meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal targets related to WASH. c) To promote engagement of researchers and staff with members of a community with limited water and sanitation services. That would include assessment of WASH needs in communities, as well as their capabilities, and constraints. Through this engagement, researchers would be better able to direct their research and development towards solving local challenges. Thank you so much your time Prof. Samuel Dorevitch & Abhilasha Shrestha, PhD from University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) School of Public Health. See you again !!
