Last month, UHAB welcomed Voice of Witness to facilitate a workshop for our staff that focused on ethical storytelling and trauma-informed practices. As an organization that works closely with tenants, HDFC shareholders, and other community members, it is essential that we approach our work with deep respect for people’s lived experiences. This training not only supports UHAB’s ongoing efforts to better serve our communities, but also provides our teams with valuable tools to create spaces where individuals can share their stories with authenticity. A special thank you to our Chief of People & Culture Tasliym M. Morales for organizing this session, and to the facilitators for their invaluable insights.

Did you know 57% of surveyed NYC affordable co-ops have been impacted by extreme weather, yet many lack the funding needed for resilience? We were honored to participate at Center for NYC Neighborhoods CNYCN’s 2024 Affordable Homeownership Summit, especially alongside our panel peers Inclusiv, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), NYC Mayor's Office of Climate & Environmental Justice, and Solar One on the topic of “Billions to the Block - Transitioning Federal Funding to Groundwork.” UHAB Executive Director Margy Brown emphasized the need to ensure that BIPOC, LMI, and deeply disinvested buildings and neighborhoods are directly benefiting from this historic federal investment. ??We just wrapped up an incredible five week training series at 789 MacDonough HDFC in Brooklyn! Our amazing Training and Member Services departments teamed up with the shareholders of 789 MacDonough to create a welcoming learning environment where they received training on topics ranging from Local Law 97 and Wills & Estates, to Co-op Insurance.????The series culminated in a celebration where shareholders who completed 8 classes received their certificates.??? ?????UHAB is dedicated to offering free, accessible training for residents of affordable co-ops. A powerful article from Bloomberg on Representative?Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (#AOC) new Social Housing bill spotlights the crucial role that UHAB and other local organizations play in advancing community-focused housing initiatives.
