Ashland County Health Department, along with the Ashland County Health and Wellness Target Action Group, is finalizing details for the expert panelist discussion on colorectal (colon) cancer in Ashland. The 2023-2025 Ashland County Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) identified high rates of colorectal cancer as an area of concern. At the time the CHIP was written, Ashland County had a rate of 23.3 deaths/100,000 population, while Ohio came in at 14.5 and the United States was 13.3. (Source: National Cancer Institute 2016-2020). The more recent 2018-2022 data from the National Cancer Institute reflects an improvement, but Ashland County still ranks higher (18 deaths/100,000 population) than Ohio (13.9) and the United States (12.9). The Healthy People Target is 8.9 deaths/100,000. Join us on March 18 at 6 p.m., at UH Samaritan on Main; 663 East Main St. Ashland, to learn more about colorectal cancer in Ashland County.?

Erin Wynieski, RN, is being recognized as a Bravo Award winner for providing Compassion in her role as a registered nurse at UH Samaritan Medical Center. When caring for a hospice patient, Erin took a lot of time with the patient’s husband during her shift, including giving him a pillowcase the patient had used so the husband could help their dog in the grieving process. Erin also spent time making the patient presentable after her passing and assisted her husband in taking pictures with his wife, which helped him grieve and respected his wishes. A few weeks later, the patient’s husband returned with flowers and a card for Erin, illustrating the lasting impression she made for this patient’s family. Through the Cliff Appreciates program, UH CEO Cliff Megerian, MD, FACS, Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair, likes to shine a spotlight on our non-physician caregivers who stand out for living the UH values with the Bravo Award.
