Today’s UH Health Care Hero spotlight shines on Kristin Petro, who began working at UH Parma Medical Center in 2002 as an ED nurse and was promoted to Emergency Department Manager in 2019 – just ahead of COVID-19’s arising in Northeast Ohio. Kristin is also being recognized as a Bravo Winner by UH CEO Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair, as part of his Cliff Appreciates program. Kristin’s colleagues describe her as an exceptional manager of the UH Parma ED and say that her leadership and dedication have been instrumental in maintaining high standards of patient care. In addition to her outstanding management skills, Kristin has a wonderful sense of humor, as well as one of the qualities the best managers have: The ability to stay calm under pressure. Her leadership has been crucial in maintaining high patient scores while boosting staff morale, and her dedication to her team is evident as she works alongside them, even during weekends and on holidays. Her colleagues say that whenever the department is shorthanded, she steps in to provide direct patient care. Kristin responded to feedback from the employee engagement survey by creating a weekly G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) award to recognize members of the staff. So each week, peers vote on who was most deserving of the ED’s award that week, and that person gets the golden goat trophy. Her staff also appreciates Kristin’s creative approach to huddles. She asks both fun and thoughtful questions to keep the team motivated, even in the face of challenges that are regularly encountered in such a busy department. “In my opinion, she has one of the toughest jobs at UH Parma Medical Center – it’s high stress, with high volume, and high acuity. We are very fortunate to have her on our?team,”?says?Joe Stefanko, the EMS Coordinator. Kristin also stands out because of her engagement with community first responders – including EMS, police and fire. For example, she regularly visits community fire departments because she knows that building relationships with outside agencies is vital for effective emergency response; it fosters open communication and collaboration. Her proactive approach ultimately enhances the care of patients and ensures a more coordinated response during emergencies. For all these efforts, inside and outside of UH Parma, Kristin epitomizes a UH Health Care Hero and for this we say thank you. Congratulations, Kristin! #UHProud #caregiverspotlight #emergencymedicine #collaboration #EMS #patientcenteredcare #emergencyresponse

  • Crain’s Cleveland Business?–?UH Wins State Funding For Comprehensive Breast Care Center At Parma Facility University Hospitals?has landed $700,000 in the state’s biennial capital budget to create a comprehensive breast center at?UH Parma Medical. The funding, which comes through House Bill 2, will support the enhancement of breast care services, including walk-in screenings, upgraded imaging equipment and increased access to specialized care. “We’ve always done breast surgery here, but we’ve never really had a comprehensive approach to breast care,” UH Parma Medical Center?Chief Operating Officer Dr. James Hill?said in a phone interview. Patients can expect to see the enhancements by the second half of 2025, Hill said. The center will be the renovation of an existing space at UH Parma that is currently unoccupied. Along with enhanced mammography, biopsy and ultrasound capability, the center will offer plastic surgical reconstruction, which many patients look for after surgery. Hill said it will also add the role of a navigator, or a high-touch caregiver who provides support to patients and guides them through processes after they come in for services. “As you can imagine, patients who are wondering if they themselves have breast cancer or are concerned about a family member who may, there’s a lot of questions that come along with that and a lot of uncertainty (so) just having one individual who basically is that point of contact who’s going to navigate you through that process, I think allays a lot of that anxiety,” Hill said. His hope is that the center will enable patients in the community to be more proactive with their health and seek preventative care. Early detection is critical in breast cancer diagnosis, he said, and these resources could help save lives and improve clinical outcomes. One in eight women (or 13%) develop breast cancer in their lifetime, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. The news of the Parma location roughly one year after the health system opened a new breast health center at UH Portage Medical Center. The organization also offers breast cancer screening services at?UH Cleveland Medical Center, UH Geauga Medical Center?and?UH St. John Medical Center. Hill said not every neighborhood has access to comprehensive breast care and that the rollout of these services in Parma will increase accessibility and enhance the quality of care in the area.?“It’s really hard to meet someone who hasn’t been touched by breast cancer in some way,” he said. “I think for a lot of people, myself included, this is something very personal.”?? https://lnkd.in/e9PJinqe

Today’s caregiver spotlight focuses on Bravo Winner Renee Velotta, RN, who brings joy and laughter to her nursing responsibilities, as well as earning trust from our patients and their families. Through the Cliff Appreciates program, UH CEO Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair, recognizes our non-physician caregivers who stand out for living our UH values – Service Excellence, Compassion, Integrity, Trust and Belonging -- by honoring them with a Bravo Award. As a registered nurse at UH Parma Medical Center, Renee has a ‘can do’ attitude and serves as a diligent advocate for patient safety, including a recent catch she made related to a patient medication issue. Renee is continuously praised on patient surveys and comment cards and shows tremendous compassion to our patients. We decided to chat with Renee to learn more about her and how she lives the UH values: Why did you choose to go into nursing? I knew at a very young age that I would be in healthcare.?As cliché as it sounds, I felt a calling to serve others.?I had many family members in the healthcare field, so it seemed natural to me that this would be my career path.?I have never shied away from those who are hurt or sick.?I enjoy learning, and I love being there for people in their time of need. I am able to wear so many different hats in this incredible field. Nursing is such a rewarding career, and I cannot imagine doing anything else. As a nurse, how do you live the UH values? As a nurse, I strive to provide the best patient care, to do the right thing all the time and to keep the patient at the forefront of all that I do. Upon meeting my patient, I immediately begin building a trustful relationship. I am always making sure that my patients know I am concerned for them and take what they are going through seriously. I want my patients, their families and my colleagues to know that if there is something I can help them with, that I will. We have such a great community of people at UH Parma. I am lucky to call it my workplace home. What do you find most rewarding about being a nurse? For me, it is the interactions and relationships that I build with all my patients and their families. I am a people person by nature, and I love hearing stories from recently and the past.?I am so lucky to be in the position that I am and to have the ability to form relationships with our patients. It is a unique position in which trust is built almost immediately. In most cases, patients can return to visit and just check in once they are feeling or doing better. #UHProud #nursing #trust #compassion #patientsafety #caregiverspotlight #greatplacetowork

  • Congratulations to Hanna Schmidt for receiving the ED System Daisy Award!! We are so proud to have you on our team here at Parma! This is what our patient had to say about Hanna - “I recently had a medical emergency and required a visit to the ER Nurse Hanna was very polite and efficient. Due to my symptoms I was nervous and fearful but Nurse Hanna was a very calming and reassuring presence. She was in complete control and nothing about my care seemed too big for her to handle. This helped my confidence in dealing with my situation .She worked very hard taking care of me, even unpleasant tasks. With her attitude, knowledge, and professionalism she is a real asset to the nursing profession and to the Parma Hospital. She is truly an extraordinary nurse by far. With thanks..” The Daisy Award is a recognition program to celebrate and recognize nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers. Great work Hanna!
