A program that combines yoga and psychological tools in a group therapy setting may help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in women with some common cancers, a new?UF Health Cancer Center?study found. The results of the clinical trial,?published?recently in the journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, showed the integrated yoga and psychological intervention eased some symptoms of cancer-related distress, especially in women of color. “Quality of life during and beyond cancer treatment is a critical component of whole-person cancer care,” said Elizabeth Kacel, PhD, who co-led the new study with Grace Ann Hanvey, Ph.D. Both are recent graduates of the?clinical psychology doctoral program?in the?UF College of Public Health and Health Professions?who were mentored by?Deidre Pereira, Ph.D., the study’s senior author and a UF Health Cancer Center member. We were proud to recognize National Rural Health Day by bringing our new Mobile Cancer Screening Connector to UF Health Archer Family Health Care today! Several area rural health care agencies gathered at the event to focus attention on the importance of rural health care.?In addition, Denise Schentrup,?APRN, DNP, who has served as the clinical director at Archer for 20 years, was presented with the Florida Rural Health Association’s Rural Health Hero Advanced Practitioner Award. Retaining complex information like cancer hallmarks is challenging for most high school students. Adding creative learning activities and interactive instruction can not only make the process fun, but boost students’ retention, a study led by four University of Florida cancer trainees found. The four graduate students in the University of Florida College of Medicine’s Cancer Biology Concentration?published?their findings in the journal BMC Medical Education on lessons learned from leading the six-week summer course on cancer biology and therapeutics. Today, through a partnership with Man Cave Health and the Prostate Cancer Foundation, we provided more than 60 men with PSA tests to screen for prostate cancer with our brand-new Mobile Cancer Screening Connector at Gator Fanfest! Our team also provided education and answered questions to make sure men have the information they need on prostate health. It was an incredible day raising awareness about prostate cancer and promoting early cancer detection! The event also included special guest appearances by several Gator legends, including Coach Steve Spurrier, Brandon Spikes, Shane Matthews, and Danny Wuerffel. We even had a visit from Albert and Alberta! A huge thanks to our staff for their hard work! Alison Ivey, Amy Gunnett, Jennina Garde, and Jennifer Woodard provided phlebotomy services and conducted screening. UF Health urology advanced practice providers Jasmine Brown and Mitsu Andre helped counsel men on prostate cancer screening.
