With the #10 ranked MSE Graduate Program in the country among public universities, the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Florida is among the best in the United States and is the most prominent materials science and engineering department in the state of Florida. The department is also one of the most established in the United States, having been founded originally as a department of metallurgy in 1959 by Dr. Frederick N. Rhines.
The department also encompasses the Nuclear Engineering program, which is the top nuclear engineering program in the state and the only Florida university that offers graduate degrees in nuclear engineering. It is home to the UF Training Reactor (UFTR), one of only 31 in the country. The UFTR is one of two reactors in the southeast and offers a unique opportunity for nuclear and nuclear materials testing under harsh environments.

QDOT Week in Junior Materials Laboratory - This week in the junior laboratory in the University of Florida Department of Materials Science and Engineering, students created a facile route to creation of carbon quantum dots from citric acid. Students developed a QDOT recipe, ran the experiment and will characterize their quantum dots using UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD and TEM. Students are also running a python jupyter based machine learning lab along with this for how ML is used for TEM to analyze patterns and structure, and how synthetic training data is made to support the training of the tool. #UFMSE #UF #materials
