Pediatric patients require specialized care to ensure excellent outcomes for their sensitive bodies. Thankfully, the UF Health Radiation Oncology pediatric institutional guidelines use "lower radiation doses, smaller target margins, and proton therapy to minimize radiation to children's developing skull base anatomy" for children with salivary gland tumors in the mouth. This results in lower side effects and excellent outcomes. The risk of radiation treatments causing a secondary cancer is low. However, radiation oncologists try to reduce that risk through various techniques and tools. One tool that is showing lower secondary cancer rates caused by the treatment is proton therapy. This is especially true for younger patients with cancer.
