Did you know that more homes are being built at the Wildland-Urban-Interface (WUI)? Exacerbated by a rapidly changing environment, these homes at the edge of the forest are at an elevated risk of wildfires. This is where UDRI comes in.??? ? Building materials for these homes often require large scale tests that mock-up parts of the house, resulting in costly testing. But, with new bench scale tests that simulate these fire threats, it becomes possible to speed up development of fire safe solutions for roofing and other building materials. ? UDRI’s Fire Safety Science Laboratory (UDRI FSSL), with over 28 years of fire safety testing and material science expertise, is helping our partners meet this fire threat by developing new test methods and taking advantage of existing ones to better understand WUI fires. ? Recently, Chadwick Barklay moderated a panel at the International IEEE Aerospace Conferences focused on developing commercial radioisotope power systems (RPS). With the rapid commercialization of space, RPSs are a key technology that enables commercial science, near earth, and lunar applications.? The panel was a who's who in industry and government, including (L-R) Leonard Dudzinski (NASA HQ), Jacob Matthews (Zeno Power Systems), Vincent Bilardo Jr (Intuitive Machines), Zachary Tolley (Blue Origin), and Leo Gard (L3Harris Technologies). Chad facilitated a conversation with the panelists and the audience about the space industry landscape, mission pull, advantages of competition, risks, supply chain development, and success metrics.?? #UDRI #UnboundInnovation #IEEE2025 #Aerospace #AerospaceSystems #RadioisotopePowerSystems #SpaceIndustry?

Did you know that UDRI offers part-time jobs, internships, and co-op opportunities? We currently have over 50 students from the University of Dayton working with us! We sat down with some of our student workers to learn more about their experience with UDRI. Welcome to our first student spotlight!? ? Meet Gavin Hellard, a UD senior and soon-to-be Spring 2025 grad from Kettering, OH. Gavin is a Mechanical Engineering Technology major and a transfer student via the UD Sinclair Community College Academy. He expressed how grateful he was that the UD Sinclair Academy helped to keep costs down and make schooling much more affordable.?? ? A year and a half ago Gavin found a job posting on Handshake for an additive manufacturing intern at UDRI. Once he landed the job and began working with our laser manufacturing technology development (LMTD) team he opted to stay on with us, even during the summers. Gavin explained that his role with UDRI was outside of his comfort zone since it deals with laser technology but wanted to take the plunge learning a new field of work. Going from machine work to laser work helped him learn how to adapt to new technology in a different field.? ? Day-to-day Gavin works in the laser lab on system design, setting up fixtures and systems, and designing cover systems. His favorite task so far has been a laser containment project where he had to find gaps in the design and learn how to fix them. Gavin highlighted the value of being in charge of a project from start to finish.? ? Gavin spoke of how much he has learned from his superiors, such as Daniel Curry. He remarked how much he’s learned from Daniel’s process and how much respect he has for his intelligence and understanding when circumstances arise. The longer he has worked here Gavin has noted how welcoming the environment is and has enjoyed the cache of telling people where he works. He has enjoyed the respect that comes with telling people that he works with lasers at UDRI.? ? In the future, Gavin hopes to pursue technical sales in engineering. He would like to get a mix of hands-on work and working with people and serving as a channel between techs and the sales field.?? ? Join us in wishing Gavin well as he finishes out his senior year and embarks on the next chapter of his career! #UDRI #UniversityofDaytonSchoolofEngineering #UDStudent #MechanicalEngineeringTechnology #UniversityofDayton #2025Grad

This year, UDRI’s corrosion team is sponsoring a panel at the annual AMPP: Association for Materials Protection and Performance conference being held in Nashville, Tennessee. The panel will be covering “Model Based Systems Engineering Methodology for the Design of Environmental Safety.”? Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a systems engineering methodology used to develop models of systems that are comprehensible to stakeholders of all backgrounds. The use of these models ensure that all stakeholders have the same basic understanding of the system and all the inherent interactions within and around the system boundary.? The panel will be held on Monday, April 7 from 10:00-11:30 am. We encourage all those interested to register to attend the conference: https://lnkd.in/d_X4SwsY ? #UDRI #AMPP2025 #MBSE #AssociationforMaterialsProtectionandPerformance #CorrosionResearch?
