Over the weekend the annual Air Force Ball was held to honor exceptional military personnel along with their families and distinguished guests. UDRI is honored to have sponsored the ball. First time attendee Antonio Conde, CAPM? shared his experience with us, “As a retired Air Force veteran, I never attended the Air Force Ball in my 20-year career. UDRI gave me the opportunity to attend at the National Museum of the US Air Force and I am very grateful to have experienced this piece of Air Force heritage as a representative of the UDRI family.” As pictured: Samantha Adducchio (UDRI Power & Energy), Rebecca O'Connor (spouse), Mike O'Connor (UDRI Sensor & Software Systems), Michael Marks (UDRI), Amber Marks MDN, RDN (spouse), Beth Conde (spouse), and Antonio Conde, CAPM? ?? Join us in congratulating Cliff Cerbus on 40 years with UDRI! ?? Cliff hit this milestone on September 1st. Starting at the University of Dayton as a grad student in mathematics in 1982, Cliff was able to work at UDRI as a student in the summers of 1983 and 1984 before becoming a full-time employee. Read on to learn more about Cliff’s time with UDRI.? ? Q: What is your area of work?? A: Since 1988, I have operated a space environment simulation lab (the AFRL/RX SCEPTRE Facility), designed to test spacecraft materials.? The lab includes a solar simulator, electron guns, and a proton gun.? ? Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?? A: The science, having a job that requires a really diverse skill set, and sharing with others what I get to do for a living.? ? Q: What do you consider to be your biggest successes?? A: From 2004-6, I got to participate in an investigation with NASA for the James Webb Space Telescope’s (JWST’s) sunshield material.? (The JWST has a tennis court sized umbrella used to keep the sun from heating the spacecraft.)? I got to evaluate the material’s resistance to proton radiation due to solar wind. The second was being interviewed and included in The History Channel’s TV show, Modern Marvels’ “Paint” episode (2005).

After the NAAMIF in Springfield last week we caught up with a couple of UDRI employees in attendance to learn about some of their key takeaways. Brian Rice: “One key takeaway is that the use of hydrogen as a fuel for AAM is growing as a solution to heavy batteries –which will allow for much longer flight times. UDRI is leading several projects in light weight composite hydrogen storage tanks for AAM so it’s great to see?other companies we can partner with.” Shyam Maladkar: “There were a few panels who did in-depth discussion on new “Infrastructure” needs of the future and “Battery charging capabilities”. Dannar Inc. presented their “Mobile Charging Products and capabilities”, which was very interesting, and they had a product on display at the airport. “Production & Supply Chain” was another panel that discussed the challenges that must be considered in the future, especially if the supply chain for rare-earth elements and materials are tied to competitive countries like China.” #UDRI #UnboundInnovation
