Get to know Stephen Mayfield, founder of Algenesis Labs and a recent finalist for the Startup of the Year at this year's Chancellor's Innovation Awards at UC San Diego! Algenesis develops biodegradable polyurethane products, including foams for footwear, surfboards, and various industrial applications. These products address the environmental harm caused by conventional plastics, which do not biodegrade and persist in ecosystems. By using algae-based renewable materials, Algenesis creates solutions that are fully biodegradable in natural settings, providing a sustainable alternative without compromising on performance. Their products deliver comparable functionality to traditional plastics. Commercialized products are already on the market, and the company is actively developing new applications, such as textiles and molded goods. Get to know Niall O’Dowd, founder of Phase3D and a recent finalist for Student/Alumni Innovator of the Year at this year's Chancellor's Innovation Awards at UC San Diego! Here's your chance to learn more about him and his incredible startup. Dr. Niall O'Dowd is solving the lack of part quality validation and early stage defect detection for the additive manufacturing (AM) industry (metal industrial 3D printing). He has founded Phase3D, whose vision is to provide the AM community with part quality validation technology to enable the proliferation of AM use for engineering critical applications. The impact of this technology is an approximately 30% reduction in the overall greenhouse gas emissions (GHG emissions) for an already more-sustainable manufacturing method. Their commitment to sustainability is shown in part through the completion of the Chain Reaction Innovations program, which is a 2-year extremely selective incubator focused on clean-tech innovations.
