In addition to leading the coordination of her Center'sevents, collaborations, and outreach activities, Taylor serves as the #SanDiego-based Associate Director for the Augustana University (SD)-Sanford Genetic Counseling Graduate Program. This week, Dr. Lisa Eyler, Director of our Center for Empathy and Compassion Training in #MedicalEducation, attended the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Learn, Serve, Lead 2024 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. The annual event featured thought-provoking plenary sessions, including a presentation by news correspondent Scott Pelley of CBS' acclaimed show 60 MINUTES, as well as conversations with leaders in #ArtificialIntelligence and #biomedical research. In addition, Dr. Eyler had the opportunity to network with fellow medical educators and attend workshops on topics including #TraumaInformed medical education, innovative ways to teach clinical skills, and community-engaged health education, among others. The UC San Diego School of Medicine delegation – which included faculty, staff, and students – had a chance to gather for a dinner meeting, and even showed off their own musical talents at karaoke in downtown #Atlanta! ?? Compassionatomy is a new approach to anatomy training that centers around empathy and connection in the lab. Medical students are encouraged to have compassion for not only the donors and their families, but also for each other. Unique to UC San Diego, UC San Diego T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion's Compassionatomy course has been transformative for students, teaching them a lesson in humanity and emphasizing the importance of patient-centered care. “We work to instill empathy and compassion with each step in the anatomy lab. We remind the students each week about the people they have the privilege of working with,” said Geoffroy Noel, Ph.D., chief of the Division of Anatomy at UC San Diego's Department of Surgery. “Still, it is crucial that we move slowly and have the students work together as a team. We show them a little bit more each step of the way so that they are prepared for what they will be doing and experiencing.” “After a few sessions, we see that often there is one student in each group that stands to the side and holds the donor’s hand or puts their hand on the shoulder of their patient,” said Noel. Via UC San Diego Today: Displaced individuals experience high rates of emotional distress, depression and anxiety resulting from trauma and stress from displacement and loss. Their mental health may suffer further due to a lack of resources, language barriers, and discrimination during resettlement. A new study by UC San Diego researchers — namely Sarah Alsamman, a student at UC San Diego School of Medicine, and Wael Al-Delaimy, M.D., Ph.D., professor of #PublicHealth at the UC San Diego Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science — reports that displaced Syrian refugees with higher reported self-compassion were less likely to report poor #mentalhealth outcomes.
