Research and Education that Informs and Empowers Today's Technology-driven World of Work.
关于我们
Technology Management is a multidisciplinary field of science that examines the opportunities and challenges of technological innovation, industry disruption, and organizational change, and the influence on business performance and competitive advantage. UC Santa Barbara Technology Management faculty investigate the dynamic interplay of technological, organizational, and human factors within and beyond the enterprise and their impact on the way businesses create and operate. UCSB Technology Management students explore the world of work through research-based, theoretical, and experiential learning and one or more academic pathways: Ph.D. in Technology Management, Master of Technology Management, and UC-recognized Undergraduate Certificate in Technology Management and Graduate Program in Management Practice (GPMP Certificate). In addition to receiving a unique business education, students can participate in co-curricular programs and activities in entrepreneurship that go beyond the classroom. Technology Management’s annual New Venture Program and Competition (NVC) teaches students about product ideation, team formation, business model development, market validation, and the art of presentation. The new Wilcox Venture Incubator allows students to develop new business ventures while working alongside mentors, IP and legal experts, and faculty -- preparing them for successful careers as business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Closing the week by wrapping up my second quarter of exchange at UC Santa Barbara. During the last few months, I have been able to deepen my understanding of business strategy through both theoretical frameworks and real-world applications. This learning experience has been shaped by the incredible resources of Technology Management, a department within UC Santa Barbara's College of Engineering dedicated to research and empowerment of the technology-driven world of work. I am deeply grateful to the guest speakers who generously shared their expertise. From Ryan Seungkyu Lee from Pinkfong USA to Brock Sutton from Capital Group and Anthony Vassallo from Sillicon Valley Bank. A special recognition to our professor, Sukhun Kang, whose enthusiasm and dedication made each session engaging. Educators like him are truly invaluable.

?? Are We Overloaded by Collaboration? Constant notifications, unexpected meetings, and endless Slack messages can leave us feeling drained. While technology connects us more than ever, it also comes with a hidden cost – relational overload. According to new research coauthored by #Gies professor Pranav Gupta, employees today aren’t just dealing with tasks but with a complex web of social demands and expectations. The real challenge isn’t simply improving time management; it’s designing smarter ways to collaborate. Gupta’s study offers a solution through transactive control, which helps organizations direct attention to the right people at the right time to avoid burnout. This innovative approach is a game-changer for organizations looking to improve focus while fostering collaboration. ?? Practical tips for leaders: 1?? Encourage transparency in availability. 2?? Align teams for intentional collaboration. 3?? Establish clear norms of reciprocity. "Toggling Tax," the time and energy that users "spend" as they switch between applications plagues every workplace I know. One study of 137 users in 3 big companies found "workers toggled roughly 1,200 times each day, which adds up to just under four hours each week reorienting themselves after toggling." This digital exhaustion, as Paul Leonardi calls it, can be battled in multiple ways, including systematic efforts to reduce the size of the tech stack. One approach, which I learned about from Paul, is to add obstacles--good friction--that make it harder to add news apps and to renew old apps. In one company that Paul worked with, as we (along with Rebecca Hinds, PhD and Federico Torreti ) wrote in Harvard Business Review, "Each subscription that was not authorized by IT was cancelled. If the manager wanted to reinstate it, they had to make a formal request to the CTO in writing. Sure, this was a tough top-down approach. But after a year of asking managers not to overwhelm their teams with tools, the CTO finally forced people to tackle the problem rather than just make hollow promises. Six months after the big cancellation, the company was using nearly 30 fewer tools." I learned of a more direct approach to standardization and subtraction last week from a CTO who led 3 teams--a total of 15 people--where each team was using different project management software (which added "toggling taxes" and created coordination problems across teams). He stepped in and simply required them to all use the same software. They grumbled a bit at first, but his teams were glad after they made the change . As with all friction fixing, there is no one and done here; it is like mowing the lawn. We all need to work together to keep trimming the number of apps and making it harder to add new ones as a regular discipline. #frictionproject

Lotte Bailyn and I are excited to share a paper that has been a long time in the works. Thank you to Journal of Management Inquiry - @JMgmt_Inquiry and Section Editor Paul Olk for providing our 23 co-author team a platform to have a nuanced research conversation about The Crisis of Care. This Crisis touches each person in our society in different ways and at different life stages: whether as a caregiver or as someone needing care. Management research, practice, and policy needs more Care and Caring, and we hope that this piece will prompt discussion and action. You couldn’t ask for a better group of collaborators!
