The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded UConn and its partners several new projects to advance weather- and climate-based solutions for the energy industry. On Feb. 6-7, the NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) for Weather Innovation and Smart Energy and Resilience (WISER) hosted its Industry Advisory Board meeting. During the gathering, the NSF announced funding for 10 new projects, with UConn involved in eight of them. Established in 2023, WISER NSF IUCRC is a two-site center shared by the University at Albany and UConn. The Center combines cutting-edge technologies with the benefits of industry partnerships to address the evolving challenges posed by extreme weather and climate change. https://lnkd.in/eCqzZ3iN

2024 was certainly a year to be proud of! Take a look at some the highlights, which further the University’s strong commitment to critical research. None of this would be possible without our incredible faculty, staff, and students. I'm looking forward to 2025 being just as exciting!

SHAP3D Industry University Cooperative Research Center received a special shout-out as an impactful research center in the latest newsletter from National Science Foundation (NSF). ?? From the newsletter: 3D printing, a type of additive manufacturing, experienced a revolution this century. We used to think of it as a tool for hobbyists or industries needing quick prototypes, but it has a more robust life and history than many realize.?NSF invests in thousands of scientists, from early precursors in the 1970s to researchers who continue to develop this technology. From?building new food?to?creating new materials?for things like satellites, 3D printing is wide-ranging. Research centers like NSF SHAP3D?support this ever-growing field. It's out! As a follow up to my recent post about my being interviewed for this, the link below is a great video detailing one of the University of Connecticut's many commitments to environmental sustainability. I was happy to be part of this video describing how #UConn reclaims its wastewater for non-potable uses around campus, including cooling water, steam boiler makeup, and for toilets in many buildings on campus. This includes the UConn Tech Park – Innovation Partnership Building where my lab, the Connecticut Center for Applied Separations Technologies (CCAST), resides. It is remarkable that water reuse can be of value in a state that gets 50 inches of rain per year. As I've said before, if it can work here, it can work anywhere. Congrats to Jacob Fortin from Woodard & Curran who helps manage this facility. We hope to see continued expansion of our sustainability infrastructure on campus related to energy, water, and waste management in the coming years. https://lnkd.in/d4m5s6gD

I was interviewed for a video about the University of Connecticut water reuse facility. The facility has recycled over 1 billion gallons of wastewater since it was commissioned. The facility lowers our campus water use by 20% by using reclaimed water for steam generation and cooling. Talking about water reuse in a state that gets 50 inches of rain per year is pretty fun, because if it can work here, it can work anywhere.
