Housing Mobility Programs (HMPs) have proven effective at reducing residential segregation, but how can they be implemented more successfully? This is a question guiding economist Dionissi Aliprantis recent research. In the newest #UCLAHousingVoice podcast, Dionissi Aliprantis joins Shane Phillips to discuss his findings, including how eliminating restrictions on porting housing vouchers (the ability to use housing vouchers in different jurisdictions) can make even more progress in integrating residential neighborhoods. At #InterActionsLA, changemakers from greater Los Angeles and cities across the U.S. gathered at The California Endowment to inspire solutions for a more equitable and sustainable L.A. Keynote speaker Darrell Steinberg challenged audience members to pursue transformative change in housing, transportation, and climate policies. On the housing panel, Spencer Gardner and Dory Hellyer explained how inclusionary zoning reforms in Spokane and Portland helped ramp up housing production, and Mahdi Abbas Manji from the Inner City Law Center described the challenges L.A. policymakers face in achieving housing equity. Transportation panelists focused on equity as well as safety. Madeline Feig explained how Portland’s mobility wallet expands transit access, Gregory Francese shared how Hoboken’s approach to pedestrian safety has eliminated traffic deaths since 2017, and Alfonso Directo Jr. of ACT-LA advocated for a holistic approach to improve safety and equity. InterActions LA is all about learning from other cities to inspire local changes, and our panel of local leaders including Office of Councilmember Nithya Raman, Jesse Zwick, and Jed Leano shared strategies for building political will to advance solutions. They added that L.A.’s challenges, like January’s wildfires, also present opportunities for progress. Thank you to everybody who attended, and we look forward to seeing you next year! ?? The Lewis Center is proud to honor the legacy of our dear colleague and friend.
To celebrate the life and legacy of Donald?Shoup, UCLA presents our final interview with the titan of urban planning. Listen in as we discuss the hidden costs of free parking and what steps we can take to end the city's "vehicular nightmare". Learn more about Shoup's work here: https://lnkd.in/g6h8bEha

How is the life story of Earl Simmons, better known as rapper DMX, connected to the history of Black neighborhood development over the last 50 years? In more ways than you might imagine. For his first book, "Where the Hood At?", Professor Michael Lens uses rap history to explore how Black neighborhoods have changed since the 1968 Fair Housing Act. According to Lens, “I said, ‘I need to lean into this to find more of these connections between music and space.” Click the link to read more about Lens’s work: https://lnkd.in/gpFTV38V And listen to his recent #UCLAHousingVoice appearance ?? https://lnkd.in/g6y2EiUE Or catch his November Lewis Center book talk https://lnkd.in/gFTjJmEV

Last week, Aaron Barrall and Shane Phillips shared findings from the “CHIPing In” publication, an analysis on L.A.’s Citywide Housing Incentive Program, which seeks to boost the city’s housing capacity in line with state mandates. While Aaron and Shane conclude the program is likely to increase housing production and shift capacity to higher-opportunity neighborhoods, it’s full impact may be limited by changes exempting single-family zoning from the new rules. ?? Only 60% of housing voucher recipients successfully use those vouchers to secure housing, but among researchers there have been few efforts to understand why. This week on #UCLAHousingVoice, Sarah Strochak, doctoral fellow at NYU Furman Center, joined co-hosts Shane Phillips and Michael Lens. She explained how she partnered with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to access new data for exploring why lease-up rates vary across regions and demographics. ??
