In recognition of Latina Equal Pay Day, today’s #LaborHistory post remembers Los Angeles hotel workers’ fight for higher wages and improved work conditions in the early 2000s. In this video clip, UNITE HERE Local 11 member Victoria shares her experience participating in an impactful action in Downtown Los Angeles that contributed to hotel workers achieving a meaningful contract victory. Did you know that on average, Latina workers make only 51 cents for every dollar white men earn? Part of this figure can be explained by Latina’s overrepresentation in low-wage, precarious industries. One way the Latina wage gap can be solved is through worker organizing and direct action campaigns for better pay. The full video, produced by Local 11 in 2006, can be viewed on the Memory Work Los Angeles website, memorywork.irle.ucla.edu ????? *51 cent figure provided by Equal Pay Today #LatinaEqualPay #Trabajadoras #WageGap #LatinaEqualPayDay #LatinaEqualPay2024 #UNITEHERE #UNITEHERELocal11 #UCLAIRLE #UCLALabor #UCLALaborCenter #LaborCenter #TBT #LaborHistory #LAHistory #RememberThis #MemoryWork #MemoryWorkLosAngeles #WorkerJustice
