Cracking the Memory Code Since 1983
关于我们
The Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (CNLM) is committed to a singular scientific pursuit—the quest to understand how the brain can acquire, store, and retrieve memories. Now, more than three decades after the CNLM’s inception, we know more about the brain and the fundamental processes underlying learning and memory than we ever thought possible. But behind each problem tackled lay several more awaiting solutions to be discovered. Behind each question answered were even more compelling mysteries —mysteries unified by fundamentally asking what it is that makes us… human.

?? What happens when we sleep? ?? Dr. Eitan Schechtman, University of California, Irvine professor and Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory Faculty Fellow, is on a mission to uncover the mysteries of the sleeping brain! ??? In his recent interview with Technology Networks, he dives into: ?? How sleep strengthens memory connections ?? The link between sleep and emotional well-being ?? Cutting-edge tools like machine learning and neuroimaging ?? Common misconceptions about sleep (hint: 8 hours isn’t a magic number!) Why does sleep matter so much for your brain and mental health? ?? ?? People Overestimate Reliability of AI-Assisted Tools: UCI Study Suggests Adding Uncertainty Phrasing Can Help Are AI tools like ChatGPT always right? Not quite. A new study from UC Irvine cognitive and computer scientists, led by CNLM Faculty Fellow Dr. Mark Steyvers reveals that people often overestimate the accuracy of AI-generated responses. ???? Dr. Steyvers explains: "There's a disconnect between what large language models (LLMs) know and what people think they know. We call this the calibration gap." ?? The Fix: By including uncertainty language (for example, “I’m somewhat sure the answer is A”) and providing clear explanations, LLMs can help users better understand their confidence levels and distinguish between correct and incorrect answers. Key findings: ?? Participants overestimated the reliability of default AI-generated answers. ?? Adding uncertainty phrasing helped people recalibrate their confidence in AI outputs. ?? Longer explanations increased user trust—even when they didn’t improve accuracy. This research highlights the importance of transparent communication in AI tools, especially as they become part of decision-making in education, healthcare, and beyond.
