FTC @ UCF provides aspiring technical communicators with helpful information and resources for their future careers.

关于我们

The Future Technical Communicators (FTC) student organization at UCF dedicated to helping students and beyond pursue careers in technical communication. What exactly does that mean? We work together to master the skills we will need once we graduate to create any kind of documentation for technical processes. That can mean everything from writing instructions to designing user-friendly websites. This organization is primarily intended for students and recent grads who are interested in pursuing careers in the technical communication field, although membership is open to all, including students from all majors. Technical communicators serve as the bridge between technology and the outside world. We take complex information and make accessible and exciting! Technical communication spans many disciplines and the job market is huge. Unless technology stands still, it will always be a growth market. Since companies are beginning to realize that poor writing and poor communication hurt their bottom line, solving that problem taps into your core skills. There are over 45,000 technical writers in the U.S. alone!

  • Some of our club attendees recently returned from the 2024 Society for Technical Communication Summit in Bloomington, Minnesota. Our attendees - Chantal Cyrier, Priscilla Allen, Joy C., Dominick Chiovari, John Clement, Delaney Gunnell, Henry Keating, Marilyn Nguyen, Cassandra Ortega, Leela Smith, and Jonathan Williams - had an amazing time attending educational sessions, volunteering, participating in social events, and exploring the Mall of America. We also all enjoyed the opportunity to run into old friends, including many people from the Florida Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC), and meet new academics, other students, and professionals. A huge thanks to our advisors, donors, and friends of the club who supported us in a myriad of ways! It wouldn’t have been a successful trip without your support.

  • Two weeks ago, FTC members exhibited at the 2025 Spark STEM Fest hosted by the Orlando Science Center and sponsored by the UCF Office of Research. Among the other community partners at the event, we introduced participants to technical communication through an interactive origami activity. Many thanks to the volunteers who exhibited and the volunteers who created the materials, including the origami instructions!

Join us for our February general body meeting on February 19th at 7:00 PM ET! Guest speaker John Hedtke will join us to give a presentation on the topic Captive vs. Freelance. Ever thought that you might be cut out for the glamorous, high-paying, and rather bohemian lifestyle possible with a freelance existence? Not everyone is suited for freelance work... but neither is everyone suited for captivity. This one-hour presentation will identify the pros and cons for captivity (AKA “fulltime” or “permanent” employment) and freelance work, then shows the audience members how to identify their personal employment goals and how to fit these into the pros for each career path. There will also be suggestions for those who haven't tried freelance work yet on how to get started freelancing on the side, something that could be of great value. John Hedtke has over 30 years as a writer and documentation manager. John has developed and written documentation and books for many leading software products. He has published 27 books and 200 magazine articles on technical subjects. Lists of books, articles, projects, and awards can be found online at his website, www.hedtke.com. John also does numerous radio and magazine interviews and frequently travels to do keynotes, lectures, and guest appearances at conferences and seminars. John is a Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication. When not otherwise occupied, John plays banjo and guitar. John lives near Tacoma, WA, with his wife Marilyn. The meeting will be held on Zoom (https://linktr.ee/ucf.ftc), and it is free and open to all.

Technical Communicator specializing in Content Design, UX, & Technical Writing and Editing. Former STC Board Vice-President, 2021 STC Distinguished Chapter Service Award winner, & 2024 STC President's Award winner.

So, where do we go from here? That's the main question following the closing of STC. Here are some suggestions that I've gathered: #techcomm

  • An update from past president Julia Southwick on the closing of the Society for Technical Communication and our partner the Florida Chapter. Give it a read it you'd like to stay connected informally with our local technical communicators or be part of updates and discussion on what's next. The Future Technical Communicators club itself, as an independent organization affiliated with UCF, is unaffected outside of partnered programs we held with STC such as the Summit trip and certain events. Nevertheless, this partnership which has lasted since 2002 gets hit with much change, and we wish our community members from STC, including FTC @ UCF alumni, the best.

Technical Writer at JHT - A Precise Systems Company

Hello everyone, As you may have sadly heard, the Society for Technical Communication (STC) has recently dissolved. We encourage you to read the details on the STC website. Effective immediately, STC will permanently close its doors and cease all activities. This includes all chapter activities, meaning our Florida chapter must also shut down. While this chapter is closed, we look ahead to a new chapter. I want to assure you that we are committed to serving our community of technical communicators beyond STC. Some members of the former STC Florida Chapter Administrative Council are actively considering how to create a new, independent organization that will offer the valuable resources and support you've come to expect. In the meantime, John, Bethany, and I will be hosting an informal gathering this Thursday, January 30, at 7:00 PM EST to discuss our options and the future. You can join us on our independent Zoom: Invite Link: https://lnkd.in/eMjZAeT4 Beyond the meeting, we welcome you to chat with us through the independent Sunshine State Scriveners Discord server: Discord Server Link: https://lnkd.in/enUxnTbs I'd like to take a moment to reflect on the value of the STC and our Florida chapter. Over the years, STC has provided a platform for technical communicators to connect, learn, and grow. Our chapter has been a vital part of that community, offering educational programs, networking opportunities, and a sense of belonging. While our formal operations have ceased, you are always welcome and encouraged to connect with the people throughout our community. Please feel free to share this information with your fellow former members. We hope to see you at the meeting on Thursday! Julia Southwick Former STC Florida Chapter President & the rest of the former Administrative Council Team
