Check out PEWS Center Director Angela Potochnik's recent post on public engagement with science for the Epistemic Injustice in Healthcare (EPIC) blog! ?? The Epistemic Injustice in Healthcare project (EPIC) is a six-year research project that aims to uncover and address knowledge-based injustices in the domain of health. Over these six years, the project will test the validity of the concept of epistemic injustice via six case studies of ill health, develop strategies of amelioration, and introduce academic and clinical researchers and patient groups to epistemic injustice to develop its theoretical and practical possibilities. EPIC will offer a new healthcare paradigm that will benefit patients, increase health equality, and improve healthcare. Updates on the project can be found on their website (https://lnkd.in/gDe8RJn7) and blog (https://lnkd.in/gsxjKfcs). https://lnkd.in/gwsH4MRj

The UC Center for Public Engagement with Science works to expand and enrich the interface between science and the public
关于我们
The Center for Public Engagement with Science, or PEWS, at the University of Cincinnati works to expand and enrich the interface between science and the public to benefit all stakeholders. We work to increase engagement with science by connecting the university to community partners and the public. We work to improve the quality of science engagement by promoting dialogue among and benefit for all stakeholders. We also work to create innovating forms of science engagement by drawing on philosophy and other humanities, natural and social sciences, and science education.

TODAY, Monday, 3/3, 11:30am: The Taft Research Center presents the 2025–27 Taft Professor of Social Justice Inaugural Lecture, The Stories We Tell Ourselves: Making Space(s) for Truth-Telling at UC featuring Dr. Anne Delano Steinert. ?? Every institution has stories to explain and affirm its origin, rituals, and values. These stories are passed down in many ways, including within the physical spaces we inhabit together. In her inaugural lecture, 2025–27 Taft Professor of Social Justice Professor Anne Delano Steinert will explore two pieces of UC’s history—stories of the university’s founding donor, Charles McMicken, and the full-body radiation experiments conducted by UC physicians between 1960–1972—and contrast the ways we tell their stories on our campus today and how we might tell them more truthfully in the future. ??? Free and open to the public. Reception to follow. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gyc98FkG

Earlier this month, students from the Clifton Area Neighborhood School visited UC's campus to get an introduction to science and engineering subjects. Sponsored by the University of Cincinnati's Center for Public Engagement with Science, the third-annual field trip aims to give students a fun and positive first impression of campus and all the opportunities awaiting them here. In a variety of departments across the College of Engineering and Applied Science and the University of Cincinnati College of Arts and Sciences, students got to take part in activities such as digging their own riverbeds, dismantling old toys and electronics to understand how they work, and more. Thank you to everyone who joined us for an insightful discussion with Dr. Abel Gustafson on Climate Change Communication. He shared research-based strategies for making climate messaging more effective and avoiding common pitfalls that prevent people from taking action. Dr. Gustafson highlighted several?psychological and societal barriers to?climate messaging. Overused imagery, like polar bears, can make climate change seem like a distant non-human problem. Politicization creates a false sense of division, as public support for action is stronger than media narratives suggest. Apocalyptic messaging, while urgent, can lead to hopelessness rather than action. Instead, communication should balance urgency with optimism and solutions. For messaging to drive action, it needs four key elements: threat severity, threat salience, self efficacy, and response efficacy. Without all four, messages risk being ineffective or even discouraging. A huge thank you to Dr. Abel Gustafson, PhD for sharing his expertise and to everyone who participated in this important conversation. By focusing on clear, research-backed climate communication, we can inspire real change.?#climatecommunication #sustainability #climateaction #netimpact
