SoIT’s Joseph Johnson is on a mission to save Ohio’s little brown bat, whose population has dropped 95% due to disease. These furry flyers do wonders for the environment, munching on crop-harming insects and saving billions in natural pest control! Johnson's team is using tech to track and protect them. Today, OhioX is proud to launch "Ohio for Computer Science" – a new initiative beginning with an open letter from over 100 CEOs and tech leaders calling on Ohio’s state leaders to give computer science opportunity to every student. Why? Because the future of Ohio’s economy depends on it. From healthcare to manufacturing, every company is now a tech company. With the rise of AI, tech education is no longer optional—it’s essential. Building Ohio into a leading tech hub requires a strong tech-focused workforce and that starts with giving every student a chance to learn computer science. Why now? This week, Code.org released their annual 2024 State of Computer Science Report. There are some alarming trends for Ohio: ? Ohio had the largest total number of schools, 147, stop offering computer science of any state in the country. ? Only 61% of Ohio high schools offer computer science. ? Ohio trails neighboring states such as Indiana (91%), West Virginia (78%), and Pennsylvania (75%). Simply put, Ohio cannot become the Silicon Heartland without the people that make it happen.
