Astronauts face many challenges while in space. Resilience is one of them. Confinement and isolation are among the top psychological challenges astronauts can face, Palinkas, Lawrence, PhD, told The Christian Science Monitor. But they often come back thinking?“if I can handle this, I can handle anything.” #PublicHealth #MentalHealth

Osteoporosis is responsible for 3 million fractures per year in the US, costing the US $17 billion per year. In a new collaborative paper published today in JAMA Network Open, we found that current osteoporosis screening tools were less than optimal for identifying osteoporosis in younger postmenopausal women. These findings support future studies to develop novel methods to identify osteoporosis in these women. https://lnkd.in/gqmX5QB8 JAMA UC San Diego Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science UC San Diego Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology and Palliative Care

The future is shaped by those who push beyond what is known. At UC San Diego, we don’t just navigate change — we create it. Every breakthrough, every discovery starts with the courage to explore, to challenge, to redefine what’s possible. But even the boldest ideas need a foundation. Research requires resources, collaboration, and investment to turn possibility into reality. Without it, the unknown stays unknown. With it, we change the world. We are creating and promoting public health innovations that leverage the university’s existing research strengths and builds on a rich history of public health and preventive medicine to advance well-being for all. #UCSanDiego #UCSanDiegoResearch #ResearchFunding

In the March 5 issue of JAMA Network Open, researchers at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science and Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego refute the notion that e-cigarettes can help people quit, a common misperception among tobacco users and e-cigarette proponents. “Most smokers think vaping will help you quit smoking. However, this belief is not supported by science to date. While some researchers have suggested that smokers who switch to daily vaping will be more successful in quitting smoking, we studied quitting success among both daily and non-daily vapers and came up with a quite definitive answer.” — John Pierce, PhD, distinguished professor Smoking cessation was actually 4.1%?lower?among smokers who vaped daily and 5.3% lower among smokers who vaped but not daily. "If a smoker is already very interested in quitting, has a smoke-free home, and does not smoke daily, they are much more likely to successfully quit regardless of whether they vape or not.” — Karen Messer, PhD, professor? “There’s still a lot we don’t know about the impact of vaping on people. But what we do know is that the idea that vaping helps people quit isn’t actually true. It is more likely that it keeps them addicted to nicotine.” — Natalie Quach, third-year?biostatistics Ph.D.?student at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and the study’s first author #PublicHealth #UCSanDiego #Tobacco #Ecigarette https://lnkd.in/gRyxt6XH

Falls are the leading cause of accidental death and mobility-related disability among older adults, with 1 in 4 individuals over age 65 experiencing a fall annually. These risks are exacerbated in rural areas, where access to traditional exercise facilities is limited. A study published in JMIR-Aging reveals promising results of a UC San Diego program that addresses these challenges by providing a safe, structured exercise regimen accessible from participants’ homes. “Online delivery of exercise interventions offers some exciting and enticing prospects, as not only can this platform eliminate barriers related to difficulty with transportation and concerns about participating in conventional gym environments, it can also bring highly qualified experts to individuals who are most in need, and do so safely.” — Ryan Moran, M.D., M.P.H., associate clinical professor “Our findings clearly demonstrate the potential to deliver an effective fall prevention program for older adults through a technological interface.” — David Wing, M.S., senior clinical research supervisor https://lnkd.in/gdAzTkAp #PublicHealth #PhysicalActivity #Aging #UCSanDiego

I'm excited to be working with UC San Diego Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science Professor, Dr. Nancy Binkin, and her Public Health Honors Practicum students as they conduct research on work-study and students' attitudes about work. It was wonderful to present to the class and have a follow-up meeting with the student team working on this project. The Work and Work-Study Team (aka, Team Grindset Mindset - as they call themselves) is an impressive group of undergraduates seeking to gain further insight on college students’ financial insecurity and its intersection with employment. I'm looking forward to seeing the results of their research and how we can leverage this information to improve the Student Employment Experience at UC San Diego. #Research #Access #Affordability #WorkStudy #StudentEmployment #WorkingLearners #ExperienceOnPurpose #StudentSuccess
