Bobcats! Join us in showing our deep appreciation to The California High-Speed Rail Authority, a valued Slate Partner of the Student Career Center. Their incredible support and collaboration have been instrumental in showcasing opportunities for our students. Throughout our partnership, we’ve celebrated many shared successes, including hosting the Spring 2024 Career Trek in which students got to visit the California High-Speed Rail Central Valley Regional Office in Fresno, as well as the Hanford and Cedar viaducts. In October, 2024, The California High-Speed Rail Authority also hosted a panel discussion about student opportunities and the role of small businesses on a mega project like California High-Speed Rail Authority. We’re excited to continue this meaningful partnership.

Congrats for all your hard work and thank you for inviting us to hear more about your journies this year!
This past weekend I was able to attend the Vanguard Leadership Summit at the University of California, Merced. This event was created to highlight all of the engineering organizations on behalf of our university to which they all shared their successes and challenges throughout the academic year. During this time I was able to network with the leaders of other engineering organizations on campus and I was able to hear new ideas on how they plan to address issues such as member retention, leadership structure, and build better connections with other clubs to foster a better sense of community. This Leadership Summit was valuable to my learning as all the clubs and organizations went over topics that I too hope to address in my leadership journey as well. I also want to give a huge shout-out to our amazing career team Emanuel Cifuentes Machado, M.A., and Alejandra Diaz Mireles, Ed.M. for being judges at our event!

Something to think about for Motivation Monday.
Connecting PhDs to Careers Beyond Academia | Harvard's Mignone Center for Career Success | Workshop Facilitator | Career Coach | Tireless Graduate Student Advocate
“I need a job as soon as possible. I’m concerned about living expenses.” “I just realized academia isn’t for me and I want to learn about non-academic jobs. Where do I start?" “I think I want to master out of my PhD. What would my job prospects look like one way or the other? Should I stay?" “I still don’t have a summer ’24 internship in tech and I feel like I’m the only one. I’m not getting any interviews and I’m getting really worried as an international student.” This is just some of what I've heard this week and it's only Monday. This is a challenging time for graduate student job and internship seekers. The same goes for many recent alumni. The hit send and hope method of applying for roles died a long time ago. The ease genAI brings to our application process can be deceiving. Building and maintaining connections is more important than ever - but many approach networking too late in the game for it to lead to fruitful outcomes. A few tips from a Harvard University career adviser for any job seeker. 1. Don't underestimate the time it takes to craft a tailored pitch, application, or online presence curated to fit the needs of the pathway you are prioritizing. 2. Shift your mindset when thoughts like "I don't have any experience," or "I'm under or overqualified" creep in. These thoughts are unproductive, and often pull your focus away from the things that need addressing. 3. Take advantage of what people have offered. Got invited to a talk/workshop/reception/career fair/networking night? Go. Offered to be connected to someone? Follow up. Someone say they are happy to chat with you but it didn't go anywhere? Send a gentle nudge and propose dates and times to reconnect. 4. Know when to both narrow and broaden your search. You can't be everything to everyone, and I tend to believe that a niche job search is the way to go. That's easier to achieve when there is a lot of workforce and economic opportunity. Know when it is time to cast a wider net. 5. Offer something where you can and rest when you can't. Give back to your alma mater, write a blog post, seek out a project-based experience, join a board for an NGO you care about. Engage in meaningful work while expanding your connections. Hang in there!
