Check out this recently published article from Kent Leach from UC Davis Health Department of Orthopaedic Surgery on how decellularized #ECM improves mesenchymal stromal cell spheroid responses to chondrogenic stimuli! This study explores how mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), including those derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), can enhance cartilage healing. By creating high-density cell spheroids and incorporating MSC-secreted extracellular matrix (ECM), researchers boosted the chondrogenic potential of iMSCs. The combination of #ECM, chondrogenic media, and hypoxia increased cartilage-building molecules, enhancing cartilage regeneration. This approach holds promise for improving cartilage repair by harnessing the power of iMSCs and their secreted ECM—offering a potential leap forward in tissue engineering. The ELSO (The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization) has awarded us the Gold Level ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support. The organization praised our medical center for its Extracorporeal Life Support Program, which provides lifesaving support for failing organ systems in infants, children, and adults. The award recognizes programs worldwide that have processes, procedures and systems in place that promote excellence and exceptional care in providing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to patients. “Our Extracorporeal Life Support Program is a model for quality, interprofessional care at UC Davis. This designation reflects the dedication to advancing health care that we continuously strive to achieve at UC Davis. Congratulations to Mariano E. Menendez for being awarded the 2025 Charles S. Neer Award at the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) annual meeting. Menendez is a co-investigator on a trial investigating two approaches to shoulder rehabilitation in patients undergoing reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, comparing home exercise-based and physical therapist-led programs. The team’s study provides critical insights for personalized patient care and optimal recovery. This is the highest honor for clinical shoulder research given by ASES. Check out highlights from the suturing workshop for our 1st and 2nd-year medical students! A total of 61 students participated in the workshop learning essential exposure to suturing fundamentals. So reinvigorating to hang with my friends and colleagues at Connective Tissue Oncology Society 2024, the world’s foremost trans-disciplinary organization dedicated to caring for sarcoma families and advancing the field together. A highlight of my career was the blessing to serve as CTOS President as one of only a hand-full of ortho oncologists on the planet. I have learned so much from everyone, no matter what station or discipline. And now I am so fortunate to share this knowledge alongside the great Jon Trent from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center with the next gen of sarcomatologists during a morning coffee-mentorship program. Your contributions are making a significant impact on our efforts to enhance treatment and care for sarcoma patients. ? The McCarvers were inspired by their daughter's successful treatment by R.
