While the overall number of motor vehicle fatalities and serious injuries have generally decreased in recent years, vulnerable road user fatalities and serious injuries continue to rise. Our latest research brief created by SafeTREC staff Jarah Crowner and Katherine L. Chen explores how considering the health implications of transportation options is integral to transportation decision-making at the state, regional, and local levels. The brief highlights the heavy reliance on quantitative data and argues for the importance of qualitative, anecdotal data alongside it in order to decrease the number of fatalities and serious injury crashes for vulnerable road users across the U.S: https://lnkd.in/gvbM87a4

Public health safety concerns surrounding road use in the United States are prevalent, with the number of fatalities and serious injury crashes for those walking, biking, and rolling continuing to reach all-time highs. A research brief created by SafeTREC staff Noelani Fixler, Kris Leckie, and Lucia Ornelas explores how the Safe System Approach works to create more equitable transportation planning, particularly by centering the lived experiences, disparities, and priorities of the most vulnerable road users. In August 2024, we were delighted to demonstrate our bicycle simulator — originally created to gather data on cyclists' perceptions of safety in different road environments — to Self-eSTEM to complement their summer camp program for BIPOC girls who are interested in pursuing careers in STEM. October marks National Pedestrian Safety Month! While the number of pedestrian deaths fell in 2023 compared to previous years, there is still much work to do to create safer streets and infrastructure for vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and those who use mobility devices. UC Berkeley SafeTREC is committed to providing data tools and analysis, conducting research, and facilitating educational opportunities to understand how we can work towards eliminating traffic fatalities through the Vision Zero and Safe Systems approaches. As we wrap up California Pedestrian Safety Month, we’re shining a spotlight on the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program (CPBSP), launched by UC Berkeley SafeTREC in collaboration with California Walks. The CPBSP prioritizes working in communities that are at disproportionate risk for road traffic injuries to address the safety needs of people who are underserved by traditional transportation resources and planning, e.g., older adults, people with lower incomes, people with disabilities, people who use a mobility device, immigrant or refugee populations, and more. Applications are now closed for the 2024 CPBSP program, but will reopen in the future for the 2025 CPBSP program. More information on the CPBSP can be found on our website! https://lnkd.in/gEDjRWRG
