Food insecurity is one of the biggest challenges facing the world today, especially as the global population continues to grow. Joel Cuello, PhD, co-lead of the U of A Health Sciences Climate Change and Human Health initiative, is researching ways to use spirulina, which is rich in protein and essential nutrients, as a nutritional solution. Kristin Huntoon, PhD, DO, an assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, has been awarded a U of A Health Sciences Career Development Award. Her research focuses on the potential effectiveness of a drug to treat glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer that has affected many, including notable public figures. Paloma Beamer, PhD received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor given by the U.S. government to outstanding early career scientists and engineers. Beamer, interim associate dean for community engagement Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, said that as a Latina and a single mom, the award is especially meaningful because she wants to serve as a role model for others in engineering and the sciences. This Brain Awareness Week, we highlight Coco Tirambulo, a third-year MD/PhD student at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. Tirambulo is leveraging data science to advance precision medicine treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, drawing inspiration from a childhood surrounded by older adults battling diseases including Alzheimer’s. Her research at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center for Innovation in Brain Science focuses on the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and effective intervention strategies for it and other related neurodegenerative diseases. https://bit.ly/3XIgsJX
