  • ????On average, tech companies that have a large variety of people from different backgrounds and demographic characteristics outperform their competitors who have less. Furthermore, leadership teams that include a greater variety of people tend to exhibit greater innovation and improved financial performance. Why is this? ??Well, variety invites a multitude of perspectives and ideas, encouraging design teams to consider how their product may be experienced by an array of users. This practice generates highly-innovative solutions that anticipate the unique needs of a consumer market made up of many different people. For these reasons and others, SIROW is proud to spotlight our Computer Science Retention and Graduation Diagnostics project. This project works to better understand the retention trends among subgroups of students within the Computer Science program at the University of Arizona.?????? Only by examining the barriers that obstruct persistence and retention can we develop interventions that support a workforce that is multifaceted and realizes the full potential within ALL of our developing professionals. To learn more about the Computer Science Retention and Graduation Diagnostics project, connect with the lead researcher, SIROW's Stephanie Murphy ???? https://lnkd.in/gmKMMcnY

  • Hot Stuff!! ?? Join SIROW this Women's History Month as we recognize the work and art of Susan Cummins Miller, a longtime supporter and research affiliate of SIROW. Before becoming a full-time writer, Miller worked for the U.S. Geological survey conducting fieldwork across the Southwest ????Her intimate ties to evolving Western ecosystems come to life in her novels, essays, and poetry, where such landscapes are woven into story plot, characters, conflicts, and transformation. ????? Miller's literature boasts a long stream of awards with the most recent being the 2024 Winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Silver Award for her book of poems, Deciphering the Desert. As we enter into a cultural moment that urges us to reckon with the wounds we've inflicted upon our natural world, Miller's writing familiarizes readers with the contours of our pulsing landscapes, speaking name to life forms whose personhood has been revoked, casting wonder where divinity has lived in quiet. It's easy to violate that which we don't know, but through Miller's poetry we reclaim a bit of our own humanity by witnessing the vulnerabilities and resilience of our natural world. ????To find out more about Miller's work, click below ?? https://lnkd.in/gZ9ZF3SD

  • Hot Stuff! ?? SIROW is proud to recognize Dr. Cheree Meeks, a community leader dedicated to protecting voting rights and amplifying black civic engagement within Tucson and beyond. ??? As pending congressional legislation threatens voting rights, Dr. Meeks fights for democracy through the organization of candidate forums and voter education efforts, reminding us that local civic engagement is a critical defense against assaults on democracy. ??? By founding Black Excellence Scholars--a program dedicated to facilitating research opportunities, leadership enrichment, culturally-responsive mentoring, and community cultural experiences--Dr. Meeks bolsters the voices and resilience of historically marginalized students and communities. ????????????Fear paralyses. But if reminded of our collective power, our strength will always ring louder than our fear. We thank Dr. Meeks for empowering U of A and the greater Tucson community to find our strength, no matter the circumstances. • ??This year's Women's History Month meets us during a tumultuous political climate for many, including women. Many of the enacted and proposed changes to law and legislation present substantial impact on women and families with children. Despite changes and challenges, many people are coming together in solidarity and choosing hope. ????? We celebrate the women who are very visibly playing a role. Just this week, three women have announced their bid for governor in New Jersey, New Mexico, and Virginia, vying to protect healthcare, jobs, and consumer spending-power within their states as federal programs are dismantled. Though we enter this Women's History Month with tired hearts, we hold strong the acts of courage and resilience we witness and will continue to witness by women and allies across the globe. For book recommendations that center women's experiences, click below. ?? May we never exhaust ourselves of women's stories, contributions, and legacies. We're in this together. ????????????? https://lnkd.in/g_Kf3wR7

  • SIROW Project Spotlight ??We are excited to highlight the work of our We Bee Scientists program. This program, conducted under SIROW's WISE program, partners with local schools to create place-and-project-based learning experiences for K-6 students surrounding bees and the essential roles they play in our global well-bee-ing. ???? A third of our world's food production relies on the pollination of bees and 90% of all plant life depends on these pollinators. The We Bee Scientists program grounds its work in the belief that raising awareness, fostering curiosity, and cultivating positive science identities in youth is a vital necessity for sustaining the ecosystems, natural environments, and food sources that nourish us. Additionally, the We Bee Scientists curriculum roots itself in community-based learning by partnering with the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum to introduce students to real-world science that benefits pollinators and local communities. ???????????? By planting seeds of curiosity and wonder within youth, the We Bee Scientists program prepares younger generations to respect the rich and complex ecosystems integral for our community and global well-beeing. ???? • Hot Stuff! ?? SIROW is happy to spotlight an inspiring woman of impact, journalist and writer, Carmen Duarte-Star! Carmen worked with the Arizona Daily Star for over 40 years. ???? In 2010, the American Journalism Historians Association honored Carmen with the Local Media History Award for her publication series called "Mama's Santos." This series detailed Mexican and Mexican-American history in the Southwest told through the experiences of Carmen's family and mother, Leonarda Bejarano Duarte. Carmen's careful documentation of her family history reveals the power of memory in fortifying an identity, a wisdom, and home base to return to when exterior worlds fail to capture your portrait. ???? In corroborating and documenting the oral histories of her migrant family, Carmen leverages memory for healing and connection. Through Carmen's narrative, readers recover parts of their own lineage and generational memory, forging deeper connections with themselves, their past, and each other. ??????
